The past simple is the most common


When we use simple way of talking about past events or
states which have finished. It is often
past? used with past time references (e.g.
yesterday, two years ago).

Regular verbs in simple past

Regular verbs in past simple forms are formed by adding -ed to the infinitive form
of the verb.

• start → started
• kill → killed
• jump → jumped

Rules

Verb ends in a vowel Verb ends in consonant and –y


Verb ends in -e and a consonant and verbs ends in vowel and -y

When the verb ends in –e, The consonant is usually • You take off the -y and add -ied.
we just add –d. doubled before -ed.
try → tried
carry → carried
agree → agreed stop → stopped
like → liked plan → planned • You add -ed.

Irregular verbs in simple past.

Some verbs are irregular. Their past forms do not end in -ed.

• I took a taxi to the airport. (take → took)


• That was when we spoke. (speak → spoke)
• One person gave me his last bar of chocolate. (give → gave)

Structure
Affirmative form
For all the subject pronouns the form of the verb is the same.

Subject + verb (simple past form) + complement.

Regular verb: Irregular verb:


• She worked at the supermarker. • He ate soup yesterday.
• They travelled around the Word. • Jenna hit the ball over the wall.
• I studied computer in a scholarship. • They slept in the treehouse.

Negative form
In the negative form, we use an auxiliary and main verb is in the simple form.

Subject + did + not (didn´t) + verb (simple form) + complement.

Regular verb: Irregular verb:


• She did not work in the supermarker. • He did not begin class until 2 pm.
• I didn´t watch the complete movie. • John didn´t lie about his age.

Interrogative:

Short questions: Did + subject + verb + complement.

Wh questions: Wh (Word) + did + subject + verb + complement.

Short question: WH question:

• Did you work yesterday?. • What did you wear for the party?.
• Did you do the homework?. • Where did you celebrate Christmas last
year?.
