Highest Common Factor
• Example find HCF of 4, 8 & 24
𝐹𝑎𝑐𝑡 𝑜𝑟𝑠 𝑜𝑓 4 = 1, 2 & 4
𝐹𝑎𝑐𝑡 𝑜𝑟𝑠 𝑜𝑓 8 = 1, 2, 4 & 8
𝐹𝑎𝑐𝑡 𝑜𝑟𝑠 𝑜𝑓 24 = 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12 & 24
By Prime Factorization Method
4=2×2
8=2×2×2
24 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 3
H.C.F= Product of common factors = 2× 2 = 4

5.4.4: LCM of algebraic expressions.

• In Mathematics, the LCM of any two is the value

that is evenly divisible by the two given
numbers. The full form of LCM is Least Common
Multiple. It is also called the Least Common
Divisor (LCD). For example, LCM of (4, 5) = 20.
• Here, the LCM 20 is divisible by both 4 and 5
such that 4 and 5 are called the divisors of 20.
5.4.4: LCM of algebraic expressions.
Example: Find LCM of 4, 8&24
By finding the multiples of numbers
Multiples of 4 = 4,8,12,16,20,24,28,32,36,40,…..
Multiples of 8 = 8,16,24,32,40,48,56,64,72,80,…..
Multiples of 24 = 24,48,72, 96,….
Clearly Least Common Multiple (LCM) is 24
By Prime Factorization Method
4=2×2
8=2×2×2
24 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 3
L.C.M= Product of common
&Non common factors
= (2× 2 × 2) × 3
= 24
