THE ROYAL THAI POLICE (RTP)

Is the national police force of


Thailand. The RTP employs between
210,700 and 230,000 officers, roughly
17 percent of all civil servants.
The RTP is frequently recognized
as the fourth armed force of Thailand
since their tradition, concept, culture,
skill, and training are relatively similar
to the army and most of their officer
cadets need to graduate from the
Armed Forces Academies Preparatory

HISTORY
Royal Thai Police (RTP) first came
into existence in the year 1455, over
500 years ago. In the modernization of
the RTP system came during the reign
of King Rama IV, designed by an
Englishman named Captain Joseph
Byrd Ames.

HISTORY TIMELINE:

During UTR Period:


 King Burum- the founder of
Thailand police. The police
service was initially established
for the first time.

1857- 1862:
 King Rama IV, have appointed
captain Samuel Joseph Wert
Amesh an English national to
design the first ever Thai Police
1875:
 King Rama V, commanded by the
promulgation of 53 articles of
Metropolitan Police Act

April 19, 1902:


 King Rama V, set up the Royal Police
Academy

1910:
 King Rama VI, granted the insignia of
Patrol Department which contain the
figures of shoe and sword
October 13, 1915:
The King merged Patrol Department
and Provincial Police Department into
one unit call Provincial Police and
Patrol Department.

1929:
 King Rama VII, changed the name of
Provincial Police and Patrol
Department to Royal Thai Police
Department.

1932:
 The regime of Thailand changes from
October 13, 1956:
 The Royal Thai Police Department
constructed the statue of king Rama
IV

January 16, 1992:


 The King of Thailand presided over
the unveiling ceremony of the statue
of King Rama IV

April 19, 2002:


 Their majesty, the King and queen,
presided over the centenary of royal
Police Cadet Academy
October 17, 1998:
 Royal Thai Police Department which was
under the supervision of the ministry of
interior was named Royal Thai Police and
transferred to be under direct supervision
of Prime Minister.

THE PRIMARY RESPONSIBILTY

Maintenance of public order


through enforcement of the Kingdom’s
law is exercised by the Royal Thai
Police (RTP), under control of Office
of the Prime Minister. Consequently,
every time there is a new government,
the RTP
tends to give a new Director-General.
The present structure of RTP is
governed by a royal Decree on the
Division of the Royal Thai Police,

Positions and Ranks in the RTP can be classified into two classes:
1. Commissioned Officers
2. Non- Commissioned Officers
THE MAJOR OPERATIONAL
UNITS

1. Provincial Police – provides services


to every town and village throughout the
kingdom except
metropolitan Bangkok and Border areas.

2. Border Patrol Police Division (BPP) –


was developed in the 1950s with
assistance from the
United States Central Intelligence
Agency, the paramilitary Border Patrol
3. Metropolitan Police – responsible for
providing all law enforcement services for
the capital city
of Bangkok and its suburbs. Metropolitan
Police was probably the most visible and
publicly
recognizable of all Thai police
components.

4. Central Investigation Bureau – National


coordinating headquarter which assist
provincial and
metropolitan components in preventing

HEADQUARTERS- BANGKOK

1. Border Patrol Division- Special


Operation Unit “Nareasura 261” has the
responsibility of counter-terrorism and
resulting criminal cases
2. Metropolitan Police Division,
Bangkok- responsible for providing all
law enforcement services for the capital
city of Bangkok and its suburbs.
3. Central Investigation Bureau- national
coordinating headquarters which
assists provincial and metropolitan
components in preventing and
suppressing criminal activity and in
minimizing threats to national security.
4. Office of immigration Bureau
5. Narcotics Suppression Bureau
6. Office of Logistics
7. Office of Royal court Security Police
8. Provincial Police Division-
provincial police formed the largest
of the TNPD operational components
in both in a power and geographic
responsibility.

10.Tourist police- Uniformed personnel
who lack Police powers and largely
responsible for writing out of report

theft.
RECRUITMENT PROCESS AND QUALIFICATIONS

1. Physical and mentally fit


2. At least H.S. graduate
3. Bachelor’s Degree
4. Good eyesight
5. Fluent in the Thai language or English
6. Not been convicted of a crime
7. Must be at least 16-21 years old
