TSUNAMI

What is a Tsunami......?

A tsunami is a series of waves in a

water body caused by the
displacement of a large volume of
water, generally in an ocean or a
large lake.
Causes of Tsunamis:

 Earthquakes
 Volcanic eruptions
 Underwater explosions
 Meteoritic Impacts
SIZE OF TSUNAMI:

• Tsunamis have an extremely long wavelength (wavelength is the

distance between the crest (top) of one wave and the crest of the next
wave) - up to several hundred miles long. The period (the time between
two successive waves) is also very long- about an hour in deep water. In
the deep sea, a tsunami's height can be only about 1 m (3 feet) tall.
Tsunamis are often barely visible when they are in the deep sea. This
makes tsunami detection in the deep sea very difficult.
• A tsunami can travel at well over 970 kph (600 mph) in the open ocean-
as fast as a jet flies. It can take only a few hours for a tsunami to travel
across an entire ocean. A regular wave (generated by the wind) travels
at up to about 90 km/hr.
• Tsunamis are sometimes incorrectly
called "tidal waves" - tsunamis are
not caused by the tides (tides are
caused by the gravitational force of

• About 80% of tsunamis happen
within the Pacific Ocean’s “Ring of
Fire.”
• The first wave of a tsunami is
usually not the strongest, successive
waves get bigger and stronger.
• Tsunamis retain their energy,
meaning they can travel across entire

What to do after Tsunami..?

 Continue listening to a NOAA Weather Radio, Coast Guard emergency

frequency station, or other reliable source for emergency information
 Help injured or trapped persons
 Stay out of the building if waters remain around it
 Examine walls, floors, doors, staircases, and windows to make sure that the
building is not in danger of collapsing.
 Look for fire hazards.
 Check for gas leaks
 Look for electrical system damage.
 Check food supplies. Any food that has come in contact with flood waters may
be contaminated and should be thrown out.
Conclusion :
Inconclusion, I would like to tell tsunamis
can be very dangerous and deadly. As we
do not have the power to control or predict
and detect tsunamis because they are under
water waves they become even more
dangerous and deadly and make them even
more difficult to escape.Here Disaster
management plays a crucial role. It is our
