WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE??? HOOK 01
Questions:
1. What do you mean by a “perfect square number”?
2. Are all the choices a perfect square numbers? If
yes, can you give set of numbers that are not perfect
squares?
3. How do you determine if a number is a perfect
square? if not?
Square Roots
and other
Roots
From the activity, we can say that “A perfect square
is a number that can be expressed as the product
of two equal integers. What does that mean?
Basically, a perfect square is what you get when
you multiply two equal integers by each other.”

02 ENGAGE
Below are some square numbers.
The square of 4 is 16, that is 42 = 16
The square of -4 is 16, that is (-4)2 = 16
The square of 10 is 100, that is 102 = 100
The square of is, that is 2 =

The reverse of squaring a number is extracting its square root.

SQUARE ROOT
The number a is a square root of b if a2 = b.
In algebraic form, if and only if a2 = b.
All positive numbers have two square roots, one is positive and the other one is
negative. Usually, we use the radical symbol , to denote the positive or principal
square root of a positive number. The word radical gets its name from the Latin
word radix which means “root”. The number inside the radical symbol which is
49 in is called the radicand.

Irrational Number
If b>0, the expression represents the If a is a positive integer that is not a perfect
principal(or positive) square root of b. square, then is an irrational number.

Nth Root
Cube Root
For any real number a and b, and any integer
The number a is a cube root of b if and only if
n>1, if an = b, then a is an nth root of b. In
a3 = b.
symbols, a= if and only if an = b
The cube root of b is denoted by .

Examples:
=2 because 23 = 8
=2 because (0.4)3 = 0.0064
= -11 because (-11)3 = -1331.

SAY SOMETHING
ABOUT THIS!
“A perfect square is a number that can be expressed as the product
of two equal integers.” Just like numbers, some people would like
to be called as “perfect”. How do you usually deal with your
mistakes? How do you encourage yourself despite of your own
imperfections? Remember, nobody is perfect.
