PARTS OF THE HEART AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

PARTS OF THE HEART AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

SUPERIOR
VENA CAVA
The superior vena
cava is one of the
two main veins
bringing de-oxygenated blood from the body
to the heart. Veins from the head and upper
body feed into the superior vena cava, which
empties into the right atrium of the heart.
PARTS OF THE HEART AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

INFERIOR
VENA CAVA

- The inferior vena cava is a large vein that

carries de-oxygenated blood from the lower
body to the heart.
PARTS OF THE HEART AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

RIGHT ATRIUM

- Receives deoxygenated blood from

the body
PARTS OF THE HEART AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

TRICUSPID
VALVE

- The function of the tricuspid valve, or

right atrioventricular valve, is to prevent
back flow of blood into the right atrium.
PARTS OF THE HEART AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

RIGHT
VENTRICLE

- The chamber within the heart that is

responsible for pumping oxygen-depleted
blood to the lungs
PARTS OF THE HEART AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

PULMONARY
VALVE

- This valve is opened by the increased blood pressure of

the ventricular systole (contraction of the muscular tissue),
pushing blood out of the heart and into the artery. It closes
when the pressure drops inside the heart.
PARTS OF THE HEART AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

PULMONARY
ARTERY

- carries deoxygenated blood from the

right ventricle to the lungs.
PARTS OF THE HEART AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

PULMONARY
VEIN

- Takes oxygenated blood from the

lungs to the left atrium
PARTS OF THE HEART AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

BICUSPID
VALVE

- The bicuspid valve, or mitral valve, permits

blood to flow one way only, from the left
atrium into the left ventricle.
PARTS OF THE HEART AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

LEFT ATRIUM

- Oxygen-rich blood from the lungs enters

the left atrium through the pulmonary
vein.
PARTS OF THE HEART AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

LEFT
VENTRICLE

- Receives oxygenated blood from

the left atrium via the mitral valve and
pumps it through the aorta
PARTS OF THE HEART AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

AORTIC VALVE

- The aortic valve functions to prevent the regurgitation of

blood from the aorta into the left ventricle during ventricular
diastole and to allow the appropriate flow of blood—the cardiac
output —from the left ventricle into the aorta during
ventricular systole.
PARTS OF THE HEART AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

AORTA

- The body's largest artery.

- Takes oxygenated blood from the left
ventricle to the body.

2. Thin-walled upper chambers.

a. ventricles b. atrium c. aorta

3. Thick-walled lower chambers.

PARTS OF THE HEART AND THEIR FUNCTIONS
4. They control the blood flow inside
the heart.

5. It is called the alternating relaxations

and contractions of the heart?
a. cardiac cycle b. aorta
c. ventricles
