Writing in your own time after class
General tips for IELTS Writing
• Time is limited = 60 mins for 2 tasks
• Task 2 carries double the mark and almost twice as
long
• Task 1 = 20 mins and Task 2 = 40 mins
• Don’t start writing immediately
• Have a paragraph plan so that you write in paragraphs
• Don’t run out of time
Tips continued
• Be familiar with all types of visual: pie chart, bar chart, line
graph, table, diagram, map
• Identify what the visuals represent

• Identify overall trends (where applicable)

• Learn from sample questions and answers

• Practise, practise, practise

3. Lexical Resource 25%

4. Grammar Range & Accuracy 25%

Note:

Grammar is only ¼ of total assessment, so do not worry too much


about it
Writing steps

1. Understand exactly what the question asks you to do


2. Plan your response and organise your ideas in
paragraphs
3. Write your response
4. Proofread your work to look for and fix minor errors

• Make sure you do all four within the suggested time


Timing
• Suggested time spent in each writing step:
1. Understand ± 1 min
2. Plan ± 2 mins
3. Write ± 15 mins
4. Proofread ± 2 mins

• Task 1 = 150 words minimum so usually 4 paragraphs:

Paragraph plan
• Paragraph 1: Overview of the visual (opening), do NOT
copy words directly from the question rubric, keep it short
(1 to 2 sentences
• Paragraph 2: Body paragraph 1, write the trend with some
data
• Paragraph 3: Body paragraph 2 (if any), write another trend
• Paragraph 4: Closing with an obvious conclusion (if any), do
NOT use your own opinion or own knowledge that is not
available from the visual
