Oxidation

Developing: Describe how to test for oxygen

Secure: Explain what happens when a substance is oxidised
Exceeding: Calculating percentage loss or gain

Keyword

Oxidation
Reaction in which a substance gains oxygen.

+ 
Fresh Apple Oxygen Brown Apple
(O2)

Note: Many chemical reactions that cause explosions need oxygen.

Usually this comes from the air but explosives usually react with an
oxidising agent.

Oxidation of magnesium
Watch the video, but before you do look at the next 3 slides: you
need to make a prediction and copy the results table.

Oxidation of magnesium

(Predict)
• I predict that when magnesium is oxidised it will weigh
. (more / less / the same)

(Explain)
• This is because

Considering your results/Conclusions

Calculate the mass of magnesium by subtracting mass 1 from mass 2.
Mass of magnesium = – = g
Calculate the mass of magnesium oxide by subtracting mass 1 from mass 3.
Mass of magnesium oxide = – = g

Describe the difference in mass between the magnesium and the

magnesium oxide.

Explain the difference in mass between the magnesium and the magnesium
oxide.

Calculate the mass of oxygen that reacted with the magnesium. Show your

Teacher Explana
Percentage gain or loss?
• We often use percentages to express the amount of
something present.
• To calculate a percentage you first express the amount as
a fraction of the total amount and then multiply by 100.
• When some solids are heated they seem to lose or gain
mass.
• Since the conservation of mass states mass cannot be
created or destroyed we know that:
total mass of reactants =total mass of products
