general , topic would be different)

Word limit – 150 to 180 Word limit – 250 to 280


TASK – 1 (REPORT WRITING)
• Total Weightage = 40%
• Time Limit = 20 Minutes .
• Word Limit = 150-180 Words.
• INFOGRAPH = Information + Graph.
• An information in the form of a graph/chart will be
given which you need to convert into words.
• You would get either 1/2/Maximum 3 info. graphs
that would be related to each other.
• Write in “3rd person”.
• Do not express your own ideas.

Do not just enlist but make proper comparisons


between the data .
2) MAP
• 1/2/3 Maps can be asked.
• You have to write about the
“Developments, Major and Minor changes.
• If a compass is shown then you need to
write in terms of direction. (i.e.- North,
South, East and West).
• Avoid using given, above and below; instead
use right, left, in front of or behind.
3) PROCESS

•It ‘s a step by step process.


•The raw materials are processed into the final product.
•A process is lengthy when it has more than “6” steps.

depending on that write the report.

2) Overview Statement. (Very Important)
3) Body paragraph 1
4) Body paragraph 2 ( Sometimes optional)

• Do not write conclusion in writing task 1.

• No extra information should be written.


• Do not write the words “Given” or “Below”.
• Do not write the words Units or Facts, instead write the
word Scale.
• Do not explain the Units or Facts that are shown on X or Y

Rephrasing the statement


The bar chart illustrates the data regarding the number
of candidates who took their IELTS exam from three
different countries in 2015. The scale is in thousands.
BODY PARAGRAPH
•If 1 infograph is given with less data then make only 1 Body paragraph but if
the data is too much then you need to make 2 Body paragraphs, by
GROUPING METHOD.
•If two infographs are given then the students need to make TWO BODY
paragraphs.

GROUPING means
to write all the
similar information
in 1 body
paragraph &
differing in the
second paragraph.
BODY PARAGRAPH
• In case of graphs, mention the key features with facts and
figures, fashion and trends, data and evidences
• In case of maps , explain each and every change in detail.
• For the Process, Cycle or Picture/diagram explain each
and every step/stage/feature in detail.
• If one main information is not explained then bands
will be deducted from task achievement (BAND
CRITERIA).
• Do not write the fractions in Numbers, instead write in
words. Example : ¼ ( WRONG ), ONE-FOURTH ( RIGHT ).
• Always write the facts in numbers (to avoid spelling
mistakes)
• Specify the beginning and the ending in the line graph
•It is good to write all the similar information together
when the data is too much using respectively.

Example :The attendance at the cultural event in ballet, opera and


other dance were nearly 5%, 5% and 3%, respectively .
• Write “ by “ for difference (Subtract) & “to” for exact

Example :
The number of students in China were 20,000 which increased by
30,000 in case of Japan and Europe with 50,000 each, whereas it
doubled to 40,000 in the USA and decreased to 10,000 in Australia.
3) OVERVIEW STATEMENT
• Write 2-3 sentences.
• Begin with “OVERALL”.
• Mention 2/3 elements.
• Capture the main trend in the graphs.
• Mention the striking feature for the diagrams.
• No extra information should be written.
• Do not mention the Units or Facts that are shown on X
or Y axis.
• NEVER ADD NUMBERS/FIGURES/DATA IN OVERALL
(EXCEPT YEARS).
A) GRAPHS (Bar, Pie-chart, Table and Line graph)
• Mention the highest, lowest, similar values OR trends.
• Mention the trend in bar graph and line graph when it shows
increasing or decreasing pattern.

• Overall, it can be seen that the highest number of


students who appeared for IELTS exam were from New
Zealand, whereas the least were from India.

• Overall, it can be seen that, the number of students who


appeared for the IELTS exam from New Zealand increased
throughout the period. Surprisingly, it was almost similar
initially for India and Canada.
C) PROCESS
Mention 3 elements
1. Type of process:
• Lengthy and complex
• Lengthy but simple
• Short and simple
• Short but complex

2) Number of steps.
3) Mention the first and the last step as a striking feature.
Example : TEA PROCESS

Overall, the process is short and simple, which consists of six


steps. It begins with plucking of the tea leaves, and ends with
preparing the tea.
D) CYCLE
Mention 3 elements
1) Natural / Man-made cycle.
2) Number of stages.
3) Striking feature (Mention any important element of the
cycle)

Example : Water Cycle

Overall, the cycle is a natural one, which involves four stages.


The sun’s heat plays important role in the cycle to complete.
E) MAP
Mention 2 elements
1) Mention the direction of major changes.
2) State any significant change.
Overall, it can be seen that, the major changes took
place in the northern portion of the university. The
most significant change was the integration of all the
science blocks.
F) FLOWCHART or PICTURE / DIAGRAM.
Mention at least two striking features:
1. Number of stages
2. Striking feature (mention any important element
of the flow chart)
Always begin a body paragraph with linker.
Avoid using linkers of task1 in task2
4) Synonyms for SHOW

• Indicates
• Illustrates
• Demonstrates
• Projects
• Conveys
• Presents
• Provides

Do not write the word “Depicts”.


DO’S AND DON'TS
• Always begin from ‘Left’ margin.
• Leave only ‘One’ line to go to the next paragraph.
• Do not leave unnecessary space before or in between
the paragraph.
• No ‘Short Forms’ , ‘Breaking Of Words’ , ‘Arrows’ ,
‘Headings’.
• Never begin the sentence with a ‘Conjunction’ (i.e.- and,
but, because, or, so etc.)
• Make Complex Sentences.
• Take care of tenses
• Write in 3rd person

• First 2-3 Minutes - PLAN
• Next 15 Minutes - WRITE
• Last 2-3 Minutes - CHECK
