PRINCIPLES OF ASSESSMENT
HOW do we assess: ALIGNMENT OF T,L&A

 The knowledge, skills, and abilities outlined in curriculum

(CAPS) build upon one another from grade to grade
(vertical alignment) as learners progress and should also
be logical and coherent within grade levels (horizontal
alignment)
 Assessments must be aligned to content and to grade-
specific standards, in order to assess whether or not a
learner has gained the content, concepts, and skills
described in standards
 Alignment between learning objectives, assessment tasks
and learning activities is the crux of good LESSON
PLANNING and execution

LEARNING ACTIVITES and ASSESSMENT
• The teacher's fundamental task is to get learners to engage in learning activities
that are likely to result in achieving [the intended learning] outcomes. It is helpful
to remember that what the learner does is actually more important that what the
teacher does. (Schuell, 1986, p.429)
• Activities should build on previous activities and avoid being repetitive, they should enable
learners to engage with and develop their skills, knowledge and understandings in different
ways
