• The highest point: Gunnbjørn Fjeld (3,700
m)
Climate

• The lowest temperature ever recorded in


the northern hemisphere (−69.6 °C)
• Climate change makes Greenland lose more
ice than it gains each year
Vegetation and wildlife

• Mainly tundra
• Not enough space to grow
• Mainly mammals and fish
• First settlers in Greenland around
2500 BCE.
• Norse explorers established
settlements in the 10th century, but
they disappeared by the 15th century.
History • Denmark established colonial control
in 1721.
• Greenland gained home rule in 1979
and self-government in 2009.

the Cabinet
• The high commissioner is appointed by the
monarch and the prime minister is elected
indirectly by parliament elections results for
four-year terms.

• The national dish is suaasat ( a soup often made
from seal, whale, reindeer, or seabirds)
• Greenlandic coffee -> typically features hot
coffee, whiskey, Kahlúa, Grand Marnier, and
whipped cream

• Inuit music is based around singing and
drums

National costume

• First appeared in Greenland when in the 17th


century when Europeans came and brought with
them clothing fabrics and glass beads as goods to
trade
• Innuits started using these glass beads to decorate
their clothes.It gradually became prestigious to
use more and more beads.
• Today the Greenlandic national costume is used on
special festive occasions and at festivals such as
Christmas, Easter, Greenland’s National Day,
confirmations and weddings.

The Tomb at Qilakitsoq

• In 1972 beneath a rock outcrop the bodies


of eight mummies were found
• They were approximately 500 years old and
are now on display at the Greenland
National museum in Nuuk.
