• In 19th century, new political idea


was created called communism,
based on the ideology of
German Philosopher, Karl Marx.
• Key Terms:
• Proletariat- class of workers.
• Communism: a theory or system
of social organization in which all
property is owned by the
community and each person
contributes and receives
according to their ability and
needs.
• Capitalism: an economic and
political system in which a
country's trade and industry are
controlled by private owners for
profit, rather than by the state.

• In 1918, civil war developed in Russia between the ‘Reds’
(communists) and ‘Whites’ (groups who were against the
communist rule).
• The west sent troops to aid the Whites, but they were defeated.
• In 1924 , Joseph Stalin became the leader of the Soviet Union.
He set up a ruthless programme of industrialization that killed
millions of citizens.
• In 1934, USSR joined League of Nations and became a major
world power.
