EXPONENTIAL GROWTH

AND DECAY
APPLICATION OF INTEGRALS
LEARNING OBJECTIVE/S:

• Use integrals in solving problems involving

laws of decay and growth,
• Appreciate the importance of integrals in
everyday living through solving problems in
the real life and relating it in their day-to-day
experiences, and
• Participate actively during the discussion.
WHAT IS AN EXPONENTIAL FUNCTION?

Exponential function depict unlimited growth

(culture of a bacteria, population, and
spread of viruses).
• THINK OF THE
THINGS/CHARACTERISTICS THAT
SHOULD GROW WITHIN OURSELVES
WITHOUT BOUNDS.
LAW OF GROWTH AND DECAY

For some constant of proportionality

(the growth constant). We have to
find the function .

Assumption: , because the function

represent a population.

EXAMPLE NO. 1

Consider a colony of a bacteria that is

observed to grow at a rate that is
proportional to the number of cells
present. At start, there are 8000 cells.
After 2 hours, it increased to 14 000. How
many will there be after 1 day if the
growth rate is constant?
EXAMPLE NO. 2

Consider the constant rate of decrease of a

certain microorganism. At the start, there are
12 000 microorganisms in a certain place.
After 30 seconds, the population decreased to
8 000. If the number of microorganisms is
directly proportional to the constant rate of
decay and such decrease in number continues
at the same rate, then how many
microorganisms will there be after 45 seconds?
LET’S TRY!
EXAMPLE NO. 3

The rate of natural increase of the

population of a certain city is proportional to
the population. If the population increases
from 40 000 to 60 000 in 40 years, when will
the population be 80 000?
EXAMPLE NO. 4

The rate of natural increase of the people in

a certain city is proportional to the
population. If the population increases from
30 000 to 45 000 in 10 years, when will the
population be 52 000?
GROUP ACTIVITY

The winter mortality rate of a certain species

of wildlife in a particular geographical region
is proportional to the number of the species
present at any time. There were 2 400 of the
species present in the region in December 21,
the first day of winter; 30 days later there
were 2 000. How many of the species were
expected to survive the winter? That is, how
many will be living 90 days after December 21?
