INTRODUCTION - GREEN TRANSITION
 A green transition is a
fundamental shift from a high-
carbon economy to a low-
carbon economy
 Focusing on sustainability
and environmental protection
 Creating a balance between
economic, social, and
environmental needs
(Perlaviciute et al., 2021).

THE NEED FOR GREEN TRANSITION

❏ Environmental protection
 Improved public health
❏ Energy Security
❏ International cooperation
❏ Promote sustainable
development.

RENEWABLE ENERGY

 Derived from natural sources

 Constantly replenished

 Unlimited in availability

 Such sources include the sun,

wind, geothermal, hydropower,
tides and various forms of
biomass (Bhardwaj et al.,
2020). Figure 5: Different types of renewable energy

GREEN TRANSITION IN NIGERIA
 As of 2022, the solar capacity in Nigeria amounted to around 37 megawatts
 A significant increase compared to the year prior (Statista, 2023).

BENEFITS OF GREEN TRANSITION

 Job creation opportunities

 Minimized pollution

 Economic growth

 Poverty reduction

 Stable energy prices

11
PROSPECT OF GREEN TRANSITION
 Reduction of
greenhouse gas emissions
by almost half by 2030
 By meeting the
Sustainable Development
Goals (SDGs) 7 of the 2030
Agenda
 Reach net-zero by 2050
(UN, 2015b).

CHALLENGES OF GREEN TRANSITION

❏ High upfront costs

❏ Resistance from vested interest in the fossil fuel industry
❏ Insufficient public engagement on sustainability
❏ Limited availability of resources
❏ Interdependence with existing energy systems

13
SOLUTIONS TO CHALLENGES OF GREEN
TRANSITION

❏ Government policies and incentives

❏ Collaboration and partnerships
❏ Education and awareness
❏ Research and Innovation
❏ Private sector initiatives

14
CONCLUSION
 Achieving a successful green transition requires action
from all individuals and organizations to adopt
sustainable practices.
 This includes supporting renewable energy, improving
energy efficiency, reducing waste, promoting sustainable
transportation, and advocating for policies and initiatives
that support the green transition towards a more
sustainable future.
