Stimulants speed up the

messages between the brain and

the body.
EXAMPLES INCLUDE:
•AMPHETAMINES (SPEED AND ICE)
•CAFFEINE.
•COCAINE.
•ECSTASY (MDMA –
METHYLENEDIOXYMETHAMPHETAMINE)
•NICOTINE (TOBACCO).
EXAMPLES OF STIMULANTS
Central nervous system stimulants used for attention
deficit disorder, narcolepsy or excessive sleepiness include
the amphetamines, methylphenidate, atomoxetine,
modafinil, armodafinil, pitolisant and solriamfetol.
Stimulants that are no longer used for medical conditions,
but that are abused, include cocaine and ecstasy or
methylenedioxymethamphetamine
What are everyday stimulants?

What are common stimulant ingredients found in

foods, beverages & dietary supplements? You can find
many of these ingredients in coffee, teas, energy
drinks, soda pops, drink flavor enhancers,
chocolate, and dietary supplements like caffeine
pills.

CAFFEINE IN COFFEE

NICOTINE

RITALIN, ADDERALL
•alcohol.

•benzodiazepines (minor tranquillisers such as Valium)

•cannabis.

•GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate)

•ketamine.

•opioids (heroin, morphine, codeine).

What Are Central Nervous System
Depressants?

•Alcohol.
•Barbiturates.
•Benzodiazepines.
•Many Sleeping Pills.
•Opioids.
Is nicotine a depressant?
Nicotine acts as both a stimulant and a depressant
to the central nervous system. Nicotine first causes a
release of the hormone epinephrine, which further
stimulates the nervous system and is responsible for part
of the "kick" from nicotine-the drug-induced feelings of
pleasure and, over time, addiction.
NARCOTICS
A substance used to treat moderate to severe
pain. Narcotics are like opiates such as morphine
and codeine, but are not made from opium. They
bind to opioid receptors in the central nervous
system. Narcotics are now called opioids.
What does narcotic effect mean?

If something, especially a drug, has a narcotic

effect, it makes the person who uses it feel
sleepy. ... hormones that have a narcotic effect
on the immune system. Synonyms: sedative,
calming, dulling, numbing
EXAMPLE OF NARCOTICS

Examples of narcotic analgesics include opium,

codeine, heroin, demerol, darvon, morphine,
methadone, Vicodin, and oxycontin.
What do narcotic do to the brain?
Opioids target the brain's reward system and flood the
circuit with dopamine, a neurotransmitter that regulates
movement, emotion, and feelings of pleasure. Since opioids
target the brain's pleasure receptors, some people experience
euphoria. Studies also show that psychological addiction can
take place in just 3 days.
What are hallucinogens?

Hallucinogens are a diverse group of drugs that alter

a person’s awareness of their surroundings as well as
their own thoughts and feelings. They are commonly
split into two categories: classic hallucinogens (such
as LSD)
What are some other effects of hallucinogens?

Classic hallucinogens can cause users to see images, hear sounds,

and feel sensations that seem real but do not exist. The effects
generally begin within 20 to 90 minutes and can last as long as 12
hours in some cases (LSD) or as short as 15 minutes in others
(synthetic DMT). Hallucinogen users refer to the experiences brought
on by these drugs as "trips." If the experience is unpleasant, users
sometimes call it a "bad trip."
Specific short-term effects of some
hallucinogens include:
•increased blood pressure, breathing rate, or
body temperature spiritual experiences
•--loss of appetite feeling of relaxation
•Dry mouth Uncoordinated
movements
•Sleep problems Excessive sweating
INHALANTS
Inhalants are used mostly by younger teens and
school-age children, although adults sometimes also
use them. Street names for inhalants include air blast,
bold, chroming, discorama, glad, hippie crack,
moon gas, oz, poor man's pot, rush, snappers,
whippets, and whiteout.A
Immediate effects

The effects of inhalants may start

to be felt immediately and can last
for 45 minutes.
Effects of inhalants

The effects of any drug (including inhalants) vary from

person to person. How inhalants affect a person
depends on many things including their size, weight
and health, also whether the person is used to taking it
and whether other drugs are taken. The effects of any
drug also depend on the amount taken.
Long-term effects--INHALANTS
People who use inhalants long-term may experience the following effects:

•pimples around the mouth and lips

•pale appearance
•tremors
•weight loss
•tiredness
•excessive thirst
•loss of sense of smell and hearing

•problems with blood production, which may result in problems such as anemia, irregular heartbeat
and damage to the heart muscle
•forgetfulness and memory impairment

•reduced attention and ability to think clearly and logically

•liver and kidney damage

•irritability, hostility, feeling depressed or feeling persecuted

•chest pain or angina

•indigestion

•stomach ulcers.
EXAMPLE OF INHALANTS
Inhalants include a wide variety of breathable
substances that produce mind-altering results and
effects. Examples of inhalants include Toluene, plastic
cement, paint, gasoline, paint thinners, hair sprays,
and various anesthetic gases.
Can inhalants cause confusion?
Exposure to high doses can cause confusion
and delirium. In addition, inhalant abusers may
experience dizziness, drowsiness, slurred speech,
lethargy, depressed reflexes, general muscle
weakness, and stupor.
How do you feel when you take
inhalants?
Most inhalants affect the central nervous system
and slow down brain activity. Short-term health
effects include slurred or distorted speech, lack
of coordination, euphoria (feeling high),
dizziness, and hallucinations.
