Questions

• Using the data from the previous slide calculate the

1. Mean
2. Median
3. Mode
4. Range
5. Lower quartile
6. Upper quartile
7. Inter quartile range
8. Variance
9. Standard deviation and comment .
Mean
• The mean is the total number of values divided by the total number of
values .
• Using our dataset our mean was calculated as
25+27+35+35+35+35+36+42+42+42+44+44+44+46+46+48+5
3+55+55+55+56+57+57+57+63+64+64+66+72+72+73+73+76
+79+79=1852 1852/35= 51.91
Calculating the median
• Median can be defined as the value at the middle of a data set
• It can be calculated by arranging the data set in ascending order and if
the numbers are odd the median is the middle data point of the data set
and if it is even you add the two middle data points and divide them by
2
• Our data set is odd with a total number of 35 values so out median is
55 as it is the at the middle point .
Calculating Mode
• Mode can be calculated by finding the number that appears the most
• Our mode is 35 as it appears the most
Calculating the range
• Range can be calculated by subtracting the minimum value from the
maximum value
• Our minimum value is 25 and our maximum is 79 hence 79-25=54
Calculating lower quartile
• It is the value under which 25% of the data set are found when
arranged in ascending order .
• It can be calculated by finding the middle point of the numbers on the
left side of the median
• Our lower quartile was 42+42 which was 84 /2 to give us 42 again
Calculating the interquartile range
• Inter-quartile range is the difference between lower and upper quartiles
• That is the difference between 64 and 42
• 64-42=22
Calculating the variance
• Variance is the measurement of how far numbers are spread from one
another
• It is calculated by
Cont
• 777901/35-1
• 777901/35= 228.6736
• =228.67
Calculating the standard deviation together
with the comment
• Standard deviation is the measure of how data is dispersed in relation
to the mean.
• It is calculated by finding the square root of the variant

• Our standard deviation was the square root of 228.67 which gave is
15.12

• Comment is that data is clustered around the mean
