Seeing and being seen

Keep the windshield and mirrors clean /clear

Use mirrors

Constantly scan traffic to the front and sides

5 © Nokia Siemens Networks NSN India, Global Services Communications

Seeing and being seen

Use mirrors before changing speed or

position in traffic

Signal all turns and lane changes

6 © Nokia Siemens Networks NSN India, Global Services Communications

Seeing and being seen

Keep signal on until move is completed

Keep lights on for safety

City driving

Watch the taillights

Bikes and pedestrians
Driveways, alleyways, parking lot entrances/exits
Overhead wires, delivery vans, and dumpsters

8 © Nokia Siemens Networks NSN India, Global Services Communications

City driving

Make sure there’s enough space

When stopped in traffic, wait to proceed until the vehicle
ahead has moved
Watch your speed

Underpasses

 Avoid unmarked or low clearance underpasses

 Approach carefully – never assume the marked height is
correct
 Watch for signs of road repair
 Watch for “bridging”
 Approach slowly
 If there isn’t enough space, pull over and use another route

Intersections

 It takes longer to cross due to additional length and slower

acceleration
 At busy and unmarked intersections, stop, assume you don’t
have the right of way
 Slow down and watch for other vehicles, pedestrians, and
people on bikes, inline skates, etc.

Intersections

When approaching a controlled intersection stop two times

First, at the stop sign or light
Second, after easing forward to a point where you can clearly
see oncoming traffic

12 © Nokia Siemens Networks NSN India, Global Services Communications

Merging

Size up the traffic

Signal early
Watch for an opening
Signal
Get into the turn lane as soon as possible
Check mirrors
Shift down to a lower gear
Make the exit

OTHER IMPORTANT TIPS
BE CAREFUL AND CONSIDERATE OF OTHER ROAD USERS AND
KEEP YOURSELF COOL.
BE CAREFUL OF PEDESTRIANS AND SMALL CHILDREN.
KEEP SAFE DISTANCE BETWEEN TWO VEHICLES(2SECOND Rule)
4 TIMES IN WET WEATHER.
BE ALERT FOR OTHER DRIVERS MISTAKES.
DO NOT DRINK & DRIVE OR WHILE YOU ARE FEELING
SLLEPY.DRINKING
REDUCES CO-ORDINATION OF REACTIONS ,AFFECTS
JUDGEMENT OF
SPEED,DISTANCE AND RISK AND GIVES FALSE SENSE OF
CONFIDENCE.
DO NOT DRIVE UNDER THE INFLUENCEOF MEDICINES
(SPECIALLY FOR COLD, FEVER,GIDDINESS,etc.) .ASK DOCTOR?

OTHER IMPORTANT TIPS
 YOU MUST BE ABLE TO READ A VEHICLE NUMBERPLATE FROM A
DISTANCE OF 20.5M(67ft) .
 DURING LONG JOURNEY,HAVE A BREAK AT REGULAR INTERVALS.
 AVOID LATE NIGHT TRAVEL AS FAR AS POSSIBLE.
 GIVE SIGNALS TO HELP AND WARN OTHER ROAD
USERS INCLUDING
 PEDESTRIANS GIVING THEM PLENTY OF TIME AND
CANCEL AFTER USE AND WATCH OUT FOR SIGNALS
GIVEN BY OTHERS.
 HEAVY ACCELERATION,FAST DRIVINGAND LATE OR HARSH
BRAKING ALL INCREASE FEUL CONSUMPTION.

2 Second Rule

The two-second rule is a rule of thumb by which a driver may

maintain a safe following distance at any speed. The rule is that
a driver should ideally stay at least two seconds behind any
vehicle that is directly in front of the driver's vehicle.

The two-second rule is a way for the defensive driver to judge the minimum safe
following distance to help avoid collisions under ideal driving conditions. The red
car's driver picks a tree to judge a two-second safety buffer

BEST WAY TO DRIVE DURING THE MONSOON

JUDGEMENT IS GENERALLY IMPAIRED DURING HEAVY

SHOWERS.
DO NOT BE IMPATIENT ,DRIVE SLOWLY THAN USUAL.
DO NOT CUT LANES ABRUPTLY.
DO NOT TRY TO OVERTAKE FROM LEFT.JUDGE THE CAPACITY
OF YOUR VEHICLE VIS-A VIS THE OTHER VEHICLE YOU ARE
TRYING TO OVERTAKE.
DO NOT TURN WITH SPEED TO PREVENT SKIDDING.
KEEP YOUR FOOT LIGHTLY ON THE BRAKE.
FIRST BRAKE LIGHTLY,THEN HARDER AS YOU BEGIN TO
STOP,THEN
EASE”OFF”JUST BEFORE STOPPING.
NEVER SLAM ON THE BRAKE.

CAR CARE AND DRIVER SAFETY DURING
MONSOON
VEHICLE CONDITION
ROAD WORTHY
SPECIAL CARE FOR LIGHTS,BRAKES, STEERING,TYRES(INCLUDING SPARE TYRE
,EXHUAST SYSTEM)
CLEAN WIND SCREENS,WINDOWS, LIGHTS,INDICATORS REFLECTORS,MIRRORS,
NUMBER PLATES
ADJUST SEAT BELTS,HEAD REST & MIRRORS BEFORE YOU DRIVE.
CAR PARTS
BRAKE PADDING
BRAE FLUID
WATER ON BRAKE MAKES THEM INEFFECTIVE,DRY THEM OFF BY
BRAKING GENTLY,ONCE, OUT OF WATER.
GRAVITY TEST ON BATTERY
SERVICE SPARK PLUGS AND POINTS (If found worn out in Delco cap replace immediately)
CHECK WHEEL ALIGNMENT & BALANCING.

TO MINIMISE DANGER OF SKIDDING

ENSURE TYRE PRESSURE IS LOWER THAN

NORMAL(THIS INCREASES ROAD GRIP AND HENCE
PREVENTS SKIDDING)
SIZE PRESSURE
12-13 22 psi
14-16 24 psi

Always check tyre pressure before commencing journey and

at frequent intervals preferably when they are cold.

TO TACKLE REDUCED VISIBILTY

REPLACE CORRODED HEADLIGHTS(INSIDE SURFACE)

KEEP SIGNAL&PARKING LIGHTS IN CLEAN AND EXCELLENT
CONDITION.
INSTALL AN EXTRA HEADLIGHT RELAY SWITCH.
HALOGEN LAMPS ARE BETTER.
SWITCH ON HAZARD LIGHTS AND DRIVE IN THE SLOW DURING A
HEAVY SHOWER.

TO KEEP THE WIND SHIELD SURFACE CLEAN

INSTALL NEW WIPER BLADES(OLD TENDS TO HARDEN AND

SCRATCH THE GLASS)
PUT 10ML.OF LIQUID SOAP IN WASHER CONTAINER ALONG WITH
WATER TO CLEAN THE WIND SHIELD,(DO NOT PUT GRANULATED
DETERGENT TO AVOID SCRATCHES)

Unsafe acts behind the wheel
Reading a map, newspaper etc
Not using a seatbelt
Driving under the influence of Drugs/Alcohol
Driving at an unsafe speed
Failing to stop or yield
Unsafe passing of another vehicle
Tailgating
Not using blinkers
Others?

*Though perhaps in a different category, eating when driving and using cell
phones can reduce your response time by distracting you and by removing one
hand from the steering wheel.

“Road rage”

Road rage is driving under the influence of too much anger.

Provoked by:
Feeling endangered by someone else’s driving (another
driver cuts you off or tailgates you).
Resentment at being forced to slow down
Righteous indignation at someone who breaks traffic rules
Anger at someone taking out their road rage on you

Therapy for road rage:

Take a deep breath and just let it go!

VEHICLE ACCIDENT

Relax
Never leave the scene of an accident if not informed.
Report the accident to the nearest police station & obtain a
copy of the F.I.R.
The Facts that lead to the accident should only be told.
Gather all the relevant details (date, time, witnesses, phone
numbers, etc.)
Immediately report all accidents to Insurance.
Share the root cause with others

THE CONCLUSION

 Care, courtesy and consideration for other road users.

 Knowledge of traffic rules and regulations.
 Alertness for the illegal acts and driving errors of other
drivers.
 Concern for accident prevention regardless of who is
the right.

Thank You
