• 1789- George Washington becomes the first president of the United States.
• 1830- President Andrew Jackson signs the Indian Removal Act and sends the U.S. Army to
violently kick Native American tribes off their land.
• 1837- President Martin Van Buren is elected. He is the first president to be born in the United
States.
• 1863- President Abraham Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation, which frees enslaved
people.
• 1872- President Ulysses S. Grant creates the first national park (Yellowstone) in the U.S. Because of
this, the government pushed out Native Americans who were living in Yellowstone.
• 1889- President Benjamin Harrison is elected, and becomes the first president to live in the White
House with electricity.
• 1913- President Wilson involves the U.S. into World War I in order to "make the world safe for
democracy."
• 1924- President Calvin Coolidge signs the Indian Citizenship Act, giving rights to Native Americans.

• 1933- President Franklin D. Roosevelt is elected. He will bring America out of the Great
Depression and lead the U.S. in World War II.
• 1945- President Harry Truman orders the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan.
• 1963- President John F. Kennedy is assassinated in a parade.
• 1964- President Lyndon B. Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination
of race, color, religion, sex, and national origin.
• 1979- President Jimmy Carter signs an act to create the U.S. Department of Education. The
department administers public schools across the U.S.
• 1998- President Bill Clinton is impeached for lying about his inappropriate relationship with a
White House intern, Monica Lewinsky.
• 2001- President George W. Bush announces a "War on Terror" after the 9/11 attacks.
• 2009- President Barack Obama is elected and becomes the first Black president of the U.S.
