Part 1 – Topic Sentences
How to write a topic sentence:
Have one clear idea, expressed in a simple statement.
(Your paragraph will discuss HOW or WHY that statement is true).

For example:
• Social media improves communication skills between young people.
(Your paragraph will explain HOW communication skills are improved).

• Members of the public should be able to follow a religion of their choice.

(Your paragraph will explain WHY they should be able to do this).

• All school students should learn how to use a computer.

(Your paragraph will explain WHY they should learn how to use a computer)

• The English language differs from German in two ways.

(Your paragraph will explain HOW the languages differ – i.e. what the differences are)
Activity:
Write a topic sentence for the following questions

• How does culture influence our behaviour?

• What are the drawbacks of cultural stereotyping?

• The ‘Asian’ style of parenting is more effective than the ‘Western’ way
of raising children. Do you agree?
[Be careful with this one! Try to write your topic sentence without using the words “I
agree”]
