After discussing several options, Lufthansa decided to try process mining as a technology to
identify and improve the current problem points in the turnaround operations. To this end,
Lufthansa contacted Celonis and they decided to launch an initiative to implement process
mining at Lufthansa with the following objectives:
• Increase the transparency of processes
• Depict existing processes in the most granular possible level of detail
• Increase the efficiency of these processes
• Ensure on-time departure of the first flight of an aircraft of the day
Acknowledging that Celonis had no previous experience with aviation-specific processes and
that Lufthansa’s CEO was not entirely convinced that process mining could help the company,
a small pilot project, a so-called proof of value project, was started. The cleaning process
during airplane turnaround of the Munich airport was chosen as the sample case and a Center
of Excellence (CoE) was introduced as leading unit of the pilot project .
