• May 16, 1888 - He boarded an ocean liner
called S.S. CITY OF ROME en route to
Queenstown.
• May 24, 1888 – Rizal arrived at Liverpool at
2:00 AM and boarded the Adelphi Hotel
where he stayed for a day.

• May 25, 1888 – He left for London. He

arrived at the Grand Hotel Midland.

• According to a letter for his parents, Rizal first stayed
for a week at a house in Beresford Road (home of Dr.
Antonio Ma. Regidor) then eventually transferred to a
private home.
• He went on to settle as a lodger with the
family of Charles Beckett at No. 37 Chalcot
Crescent in Primrose Hill. who esteem him
for £2 a week.
• He made changes in the plot of El
Filibusterismo and revised the chapter
already written.

• Rizal came to know Dr. Reinhold Rost through a letter
from Dr. Ferdinand Blumentritt.
• He called Rizal “Hombre Perla” or “a pearl
of a man”.
• June 2, 1888 – Dr. Reinhold Rost and family
tendered a tea party in honor of Rizal. He
would then visit Rost’s residence for
afternoon tea in Sundays. On his way, he
would met Friedrich Engels, a revolutionary
socialist.

• In London, Rizal devoted time defending himself and
the Noli from various attacks.
• Rizal spent much of his time in British
Museum looking for valuable pieces of
historical literature about the Philippines.
• He registered as a reader at the British
Museum on 16 August 1888 and busied
himself copying the entire work of Antonio
de Morga's Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas.

• To improve his knowledge in English language.
• To study and annotate Morga’s Sucessos Delas Islas
Filipinas.
• London was a safe place to carry on his fight against
Spanish tyranny.
