POE-X Temporary Power and Lighting

The POE-X eco-system started back in 2016 with the Rover Temporary Lighting and Power
Solution. Since its inception it has become a regular feature on Australian construction sites
where the extra low voltage solution has no doubt saved the lives of construction workers who
can die from electrocution events using 240V AC*.

POE-X SYSTEM ELIMINATES 90% of 110V/240V AC power from construction sites and almost
100% of AC power cabling.

• PoE lighting solution seeing more than 2000 temporary lighting points deployed on building
sites across Australia.

• At the heart of the system is the ROVER POE power source delivering up to 250W per CAT6
connection (roughly 5A, 56 V).

• The ROVER power source powers LED lights daisychained by CAT6 cables delivering the
high DC power to up to 5-20 connected LED lights in stretches of over 100m.

• Systems can provide WIFI access points and mobile

applications for controlling power, lights, security systems and
other networked devices.

• Simple technology that does not require network engineer

skills to operate. Plug and play and no IP Addresses.
* Finalist 2018 NSW SafeWork Awards - Since the system was introduced in 2016 there have been no reports of harm to personnel
on sites using POE-X/Rover technology

Power Stations for Office Installations

It was soon realised that the power station technology had application in
commercial, industrial and domestic applications to reduce the need for AC
cabling, particularly where CAT6 data cables are already deployed.

In addition to the products developed below there was a need to provide a

communications protocol for communicating low rates of data on top of the
conventional network signals so as to provide control and monitoring functions
for the various appliances that can connect to a POEmi™ port.

• Workspace data and power hub (PDU) which is fed by a single 300W POEmi
port. The hub includes power for low-voltage LED lighting, Ethernet port for
data, USB port for charging and communications, battery backup, and
various inputs for PIR detectors etc for sensing occupancy.

• Multi-port Mid-Span injector (PSE) injects up to 300W of DC power into the

CAT6 cables and uses Current Balance detection to help identify high-
resistance connections and cables to avoid the possibility of fire.

• Multiple POEmi™ Ports have been used to receive up to 1000 watt in our
high-power PDU solution with optional soft wiring outputs for connection
to workspace furniture and equipment.

Virtually eliminates AC cabling and use of licensed electricians in

office deployments and fit outs where data cables are installed
Novel POE-X™ PDU Appliances

Each of the following devices with AC power outlets are powered using high powered
DC POE-X connections provided by the POE-X™ PSE. They include

GPO Power Outlets with USB PD

• Incorporating one or more POE-X™ connections, the GPO power outlet provides
AC and DC power outlets, USB and optionally, RJ-45 connections for data.

Lighting Controllers (DALI, DSI)

• Incorporating one or more POE-X™ connections, Lighting Controller
is adapted to control one or more lighting fixtures including
those powered by AC power and controlled by way of legacy
lighting control systems such as DALI and DSI. The PSE receives
the legacy commands and communicates them to the PDU over
common mode signaling system which is then converted back to
legacy commands output over the legacy interface.

Charging Towers
• Incorporating one or more POE-X™ connections, the GPO power outlet provides
AC and DC power outlets and also charging bays and wireless access point and
emergency LED lighting. For use in school and office environments.
Multi Drop Power, Data and Lighting

The third iteration of the POEmi™ system saw the overlayed

longitudinal signalling system incorporate a multi-drop solution
enabling multiple ethernet powered appliances to be daisychained on
the one POEmi™ port and communicate across the string of devices
including devices on other POEmi™ ports.

• Special care has been taken using controlled impedance techniques

to the reduce insertion loss that can result from a multi-drop
interface. A limit of 15 appliances per PoE port has been set to
avoid degrading the signal integrity of the Ethernet data bearers.

• This approach helps mimic the wiring topology that is common

practice in residential and commercial electrical installations. For
example, a single POEmi™ port may provide 14 lighting points as
well as interface to a light switch/dimmer control plate

• To help access the residential and commercial lighting market

effectively we have developed a POEmi™ Supervisor Integrated
Circuit This makes the solution cheap enough to fit into a light
fitting. Which should help us access a 134B annual Global market
for LED lighting.
