Communication relies heavily on conversation. Interaction between the speaker

RIVIEW OF and the interlocutor always happen in a conversation. There must be at least two
RELATED participants in a discussion speaker and the interlocutor. Turn taking, adjacency
pairs, opening and closing conversations are just a few of the crucial factors that
LITERATURE
both speakers and interlocutors in conversation need to keep in mind.

RESEARCH According to Yule (1996), an adjacency pair is a conversational section in which

METHOD each speaker takes one turn. In addition to having diverse speaking styles, many
speakers have unique conversational strategies. Adjacency pairs are the naturally
occurring conversational patterns. They always have a first part and a second half

SUGGESTION
INTRODUCTION ADJACENCY PAIRS
Datum 67
Greeting-goodbye (Yule, 1996) here seems to be a fit
Julieta: “Mirabel!”
between what the first person who speaks uses as their
Mirabel: “Mama”
RIVIEW OF greeting, and what the person who is given that greeting
Julieta: “Ay mi amor, I was so worried… we couldn’t find you”
returns.
RELATED Question-answer is a type of adjacency pairs in the Datum 1
LITERATURE compilation of adjacency pairs types proposed by Yule Mirabel: “This is where our magic comes from?”
(1996). Abuela: “Mm-hmm, this candle holds the miracle given to our
family.”
Thanking-response also appropriate way of responding to first

speaker’s conversation. The second speaker may also have
METHOD another choice of responding to the act such as giving a Mirabel: “Thanks”
comment on the conversation. Donkey delivery guy: “Oh, and tell Antonio good luck.”

commands better than direct commands”. Camilo: “Jose!”

CONCLUSION Insertion sequence: According Yule (1996) there appears to be
Kids: “What’s your Gift?”
question (Q2) in response to a question (Q1), the assumption is
AND that once the second part (A2) of the insertion sequence is Mirabel: “Who’s asking?”
provided, the second part (A1) of the initial question (Q1) will Kids: “Us!”
SUGGESTION follow. Mirabel: “Well, “us” I can’t just talk about myself. I’m only part of the
amazing Madrigal.”
INTRODUCTION PREFERENCE STRUCTURE
Datum 4 Assessment-agree is the first preference structure by Yule (1996). In
Mirabel: “What do you think my Gift will be?” this case, the preference structure occurred because the first
Abuela: “You are a wonder, Mirabel Madrigal.” speakers give comment or opinion. The second speaker give an
RIVIEW OF answer agree.
RELATED Datum 15 Assessment-disagree, when the speaker has to produce second part
Kids: “You didn’t get a Gift?” responses that are dispreferred, almost risking the impression of
LITERATURE Mirabel: “Uuuuhh..” non-participation in the conversational structure based on Yule
(1996).
Datum 54 Proposal-agree and disagree by Yule (1996) the simple second part
RESEARCH Mirabel: “Our family needs help, and you need to get outta here.” as the responses from a proposal utterance will have structurally
METHOD Tio Bruno: “Yeah” expected next act (preferred) or unexpected next act (dispreferred)
which can be interpreted by the responses from the other speakers
Datum 37 showing the particular meaning of the conversation itself
FINDING AND Mirabel: “Luisa, will you just… just tell me what it is.”
Luisa: “There’s nothing to tell.”
DISCUSSION Mirabel: “You’re obviously worried about something.” Request-accept is a type of preference structure in which it is
act to ask for someone politely to do something. As stated by
Datum 26 Yule (1996), indirect commands or request are simply
CONCLUSION Antonio: “I need you.” considered as more gentle or more polite way to express
Mirabel: “Come on, let’s get you to your door.”
AND command better than direct commands.

SUGGESTION Datum 29
Mirabel: “The tiles were falling, and there were cracks everywhere Request-refuse as one of the types of preference structure showed
and the candle almost went out” that different forms of sentence as the intial of the pairs can be still
Abuela: “Show me.” included in one type.
Mirabel: “What? No, that’s… the cracks were there.”
