AIM

• To determine the individual and combined effects of

egg shell powder and hydrated lime on the

engineering properties of expansive soil.

Title of Presentation: JOURNAL OF TECHNOLOGY. 3

NAME OF PRESENTER (Rank)
OBJECTIVES
• To study the effect of the addition of eggshell powder, hydrated
lime, and both ESP and hydrated lime mixtures on the
compaction characteristics of expansive soil.
• To study the influence of the hydrated lime and eggshell powder
combination on the linear shrinkage and swelling behaviour of
the expansive soil.
• To study the effects of eggshell powder, hydrated lime, and both
ESP and hydrated lime on the index properties of the expansive
soil.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Ghana's waste disposal is causing pollution and public

health issues, but eggshell powder can be used in

engineering applications like road construction,

benefiting underdeveloped and developing countries,

food manufacturers, and the construction industry.

METHODOLOGY CONT”
ATTERBERG LIMIT TEST (CASAGRANDE METHOD)

• Liquid limit test

• Plastic limit test

The test was performed in

accordance with ASTM D 4318.

Title of Presentation: JOURNAL OF TECHNOLOGY. 9

METHODOLOGY CONT”

• SHRINKAGE TEST
The test was performed in accordance with BS 1377, Part 2,
1990.
RESULTS AND ANALYSIS
• FREE SWELL INDEX = (Vd – Vk) /Vk * 100
Vd = volume of cylinder containing distilled water.
Vk = Volume of cylinder containing kerosene
FSI = 50% , LL = 61.61%, PL = 35.2% & SL = 11mm

RESULTS AND ANALYSIS CONT’
• LINEAR SHRINKAGE
A decrease in shrinkage has been observed as the contents
of the additives increases.
