Types
Headline
A headline is defined as the heading of a news story or article It is generally placed on the top
of the story, printed in large type and gives the news succinctly in an attention-grabbing
manner.
 Generally written by “Copy Editor”
 Use of active voice/ verb.
 Simple and direct sentences.
 Tense- Present
 Headline Writer know as – “Brevity Expert”.
 “Ticket on the meat”- Ogilvy
Functions of a Headline
1. To attract the audience attention
2. To figure out your readers
3. To convey a message which is complete
4. To facilitate the reader in reading the whole story
5. Draw Attention
6. Quick Insight about the news story
Do’s and Don’ts
 1. Keep it short and simple.
 2. Remember your target audience/ reader.
 3. Keep the placement, positioning and curreney of the news story in mind.
 4.Avoid Jargons.
 5. Be specific
 6. Use numerals for numbers instead of words.
 7. Avoid using auxiliary verbs (is, are) and articles (a, an, the).
 8. Past events are reported in the present tense.
 9.Use popular acronyms, if any.
 10. Write multiple headlines and choose one.
Types of Headline
Banner Headline-
Banner Headlines are attention grabbers.
The banner head is set the full-page width at
the top of a news page to draw attention to the
lead story of that particular page.
Crossline Headline
It does not always span the full width of the page ,But does cover all the columns of the story
to which it pertains.
Jump Head
Most newspaper now write complete headlines for the jump. They often
emphasize the information in the jump rather than repeat headline from
the front page.
Flush Left & Flush Right
 The Flush left head is a two or three line head with each line set flush left.
 The lines do not have to be equal in width or set full.
 In Flush Right, all lines are to the right-side.
Inverted Pyramid
The first line fills in the entire column, then uses less space as
it gets to the bottom.
Kicker Headline
Kicker, also known as a tag line.
Smaller head above main headline. Can be
used to add additional information.

Hammer Headline
It is also called as Reverse head.
Second line is smaller type.

Waist (Waist-line) Headline
In this pattern, first and third lines are equal length and second line is shorter and
centered.

Bulging Belly Headline
In this pattern, first and third lines are equal length and second line is longer.
