Description of course subject

This course subject provides understanding of major

building materials used in the construction industry.

The course subject will discuss typical manufacturing and

processing, structure, properties, performance, end uses
and maintenance requirements of each material.

► Students are expected to increase their knowledge
on the practical side of the theoretical concepts
learned in Building Material class and non-cognitive
skill of the following:
► Oral and written communication
► Team building and leadership skills
► Coordination and organizational skill.
► There are a total of 5 nos. of practical labs to be
completed:
► Masonry – Lab no. 1: absorption rate and
moisture content test
► Concrete – Lab no. 2 and 4: workability and
compressive strength
► Aggregates – Lab no. 3: sieve analysis
► Metal – Lab no. 5: ductility
► Each lab session is 3 hours.

ASSIGNMENT
► Student should demonstrate concerns of the materials that are
being used on building our houses which does not help to
improve the environment and explain how a sustainable
building material improves our environment.

► Students are required to select one building and analyze the

existing materials and propose two (2) materials that related
to the green materials.

► This is a group effort which will assess

► The ability of students to describe material properties

that enhance sustainable development including
durability, re-use and recycling.

► Students understanding of the principles for selecting

sustainable construction materials and components
during the design process.

► Students explanation on the application of sustainable

material in protecting our environment and
evaluation of sustainable materials on a building.
