LESSON 2

KINDS OF VOLCANOES
GROUP 2
VOLCANO
Refers to mountain or hill
Typically conical
Having a crater or vent in which lava, rock
fragments, hot vapor and gas.
or have been erupted from the earth's crust.
TYPES OF VOLCANOES
IN TERMS OF STRUCTURE

CINDER CONE COMPOSITE VOLCANO

VOLCANO SHIELD VOLCANO or STRATOVOLCANO
SHIELD VOLCANO
SHIELD VOLCANO DEFINITION
Is a broad volcano with sloping
sides that is formed mainly out
of runny lava that flows out of
its central.
FORMATION
 Build mainly out of basaltic lava of low
SHIELD VOLCANO
viscosity. The lava flows out, cool and
hardens, adding to layers of cooled and
hardened lava underneath it. This process
creates a gradual increase in elevation over
time resulting in the formation of shield
volcanoes.
CHARACTERISTICS
SHIELD VOLCANO  Easily identified because they are tall
and broad, with flat rounded shape.
 Resembles a warrior’s shield lying on the
ground
 Build mainly out of basaltic lava of low
viscosity.
SHIELD VOLCANO CHARACTERISTICS
 The lava erupted from the shield volcanoes
are runny and non-acidic.
 As the erupted lava is runny, they flow long
distances before they solidify, this results in
the gentle sides of shield volcanoes.
SHIELD VOLCANO CHARACTERISTICS
 There are shorter periods between
eruptions, and the explosions are
less violent.
 Shield Volcanoes are found on
divergent boundaries.
