Model of intercultural
sensitivities

• In 1986, Milton J. Bennett


developed the model of
intercultural sensitivity.
• That moves from
ethnocentrism to ethno-
relativism.
1.Denial of cultural differences
 Fail to recognize that cultures which are different and no behavior, and
traditions are universally applicable.
 Total lack of cultural sensitivity.

2. Defense against cultural differences


 People perceive other cultures as threatening, undesirable and disruptive.

3. Minimization of cultural differences


 People consider their own cultural values as being universally applicable.
 Manifestation of ethnocentrism
4. Acceptance of cultural differences
 People recognize that there are differences between cultures.
 Realize differences should be respected.

5. Adaption of cultural difference


 Empathize and appreciate other’ s experiences and share information without
reservation.
 Mutually adapt ot each other’ s cultural practices.

6. Integration of cultural difference

 Non-dominant groups move to the dominant groups mostly.


 Immigrants and diaspora.
