CYCLOCONVERTER

A cycloconverter converts a constant voltage, constant frequency AC

waveform to another AC waveform of a different frequency. The simple block
diagram of cycloconverter is shown below:
WHY WE USE CYCLOCONVERTER?

The answer - to this question is Speed Control. Cycloconveters are

extensively used for driving large motors like the one used in Rolling mills,
Ball mills Cement kils etc. The out frequency of a Cycloconverters can be
reduced upto to zero which helps us to start very large motors with full load at
minimum speed and then gradually increase the speed of the motor by
increasing the output Frequency.
MODES OF CYCLOCONVERTER
1) Blocking Mode - When the load current is positive, the positive converter supplies the
required voltage and the negative converter is disabled. On the other hand, when the load
current is negative, then the negative converter supplies the required voltage and the
positive converter is blocked. This operation is called the blocked mode operation, and
the cycloconverters using this approach are called blocking mode cycloconverters.
2) Circulating Current Mode - In this type of converter, both converters are in ON state. But when
both positive and negative converters work at the same time, the supply is short-circuited. The
intergroup reactor (IGR) is connected in between the converters to avoid this short circuiting.
TYPES OF CYCLOCONVERTERS
1)Step-Up CCV - It can provide 2)Step-Down CCV - It provides
an output frequency greater than output frequency lesser than the input
the input frequency by using line frequency by using forced
commutation. commutation.

Line commutation – Forced commutation –

- requires Ac input - requires DC input
- no external components required - external components required
- used in control rectifiers, AC - used in choppers, inverters
voltage controller - power loss
- no power loss - significant cost
- zero cost
SINGLE PHASE TO SINGLE PHASE
CYCLOCONVERTER
It consists of two converters that are linked back to back as shown below. During the
first two cycles of input voltage, the +positive converter will operates and provide the
current to the load whereas negative converter disabled. During the next two cycle
the -negative converter will operates and provide the current to the load in the
opposite direction whereas positive converter disabled. When one converter is in
operation, the other will be in the disabled condition. Therefore, there is no
circulating current between these converters.
THREE PHASE TO SINGLE PHASE
CYCLOCONVERTER

This type of converter can operates in four quadrants (+V, +I, -V, -I) in two
modes (inverting and rectifying). Here; +V, +I are in rectifying modes and -V, -I
are in inverting modes. Positive converters will provide positive current and
negative converters will provide negative current to the load. At a time, one
converter will operate and circulating current not exists. The circuit is shown
below.
THREE PHASE TO THREE PHASE CYCLOCONVERTER
These types of Cycloconvertes are formed by using 3 three-phase to single cycloconverters
linked together to the load and. The phase of output voltages are 120 o shifted. The circuit
diagram is shown below. The circulating current mode of operation is used, if both positive
and negative converters conduct at the same time. (IGR) Inter-group reactor in each phase is
needed. But, if non-circulating current mode of operation is used, where only one converter
(positive or negative) in each phase, conducts at a time, the reactors are not needed.
APPLICATIONS OF
CYCLOCONVERTERS
The applications of cycloconverters include:

• Cement mill drives

• Rolling mills
• Ship propulsion drivers
• Water pumps
• Washing machines
• Mine winders
PROS AND CONS OF CYCLOCONVERTER

• The major advantage of cyclo-converter is that it uses a line commutation

technique for turning OFF the thyristors.
• But, the major problem with cyclo-converter is that it produces much
distorted waveforms for higher frequencies.
