CLAIMS
LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1. Identify the different types of claims

2. Characterize each type of claim
What is a "claim"?
A claim is a specific and arguable
statement that contains the main
point of an essay.
Three Types of Claims:

1. Claim of Fact

2. Claim of Value

3. Claim of Policy
CLAIM OF FACT
- argues that a condition has existed,
is existing, or will continue to exist.
Examples:

Water can be an alternative to gas.

Music can improve one's mental

health.
CLAIM OF VALUE
- makes a judgment of something to
show approval or disapproval.
Examples:

Hope is what we need in trying

times.

It is better to try and fail than to

have not tried at all.
CLAIM OF POLICY
- states that something should or
should not be done and calls for an
action.
Examples:

Paper bags should be used in

stores to minimize the use of
plastic.

Students should be taught how to

manage their privacy in the use of
social media sites.
