Basic Information
1. Ignatius Harjanto, Anita Lie, Diah Wihardini, Laura Pryor & Mark Wilson
2. Community-based teacher professional development in remote areas in
Indonesia
3. Internet
4. Journal of Education for tEaching, 2018 Vol. 44, no. 2, 212–231
5. The information in the journal is regarding the professional development of
teachers, especially in elementary schools in remote areas of Indonesia.
6. The author's goal is to find out about teacher development, especially in
elementary schools in remote areas, especially Riau, Jambi and Sumatra.
ABSTRACT
1. I think the title is right
2. Most of the information has been entered into the abstract in the journal
3. I think the article is specific because it lists what methods were used in conducting the
research.
4. Here, The conclusion of this abstract is focusing on the results of development training
professionalism for teachers in remote areas in Indonesia.
INTRODUCTION / BACKGROUND
1. Improving the quality of teachers is an important step for
improve the quality of schools, especially those in remote areas
2. Not all teacher development programs are effective,
3. However, Professional development programs must consider knowledge and skills practical to help
students achieve their learning outcomes.
4. The educational significance of the problem discussed about an effort made to increase the level
or degree of a teacher's profession which concerns the ability of teachers, both mastery of teaching
materials or mastery of teaching methodologies

5. This study focuses on how the Tanoto Foundation designs and implements
their teacher quality improvement program for apprentice teachers in remote schools in
Indonesia and discusses the extent to which teachers benefit from this program (Tanoto
Foundation 2016)..
LITERATURE REVIEW
1. The Teacher and Lecturer Law initiated in 2005 entrusted teacher
quality reform in Indonesia in the teacher certification program
(Fahmi, Maulana, and Yusuf 2011). Program this certification aims
to 'improve the previous teaching license program
2. Meta-analysis of program studies teacher professional development
in mathematics and science in the US, Blank and de las Alas (2009)
found that 16 studies reported a significant effect of teacher
development on improving student achievement
3. The research aims to support and expand the theory
4. Yes, all cited references relevant to the problem under investigation
5. Yes there is another hypothesis , Archibald et al. (2011) stated that teacher quality is
important because teachers have influence which is more significant to student achievement
compared to other school factors.
6. More than a series of summaries, examples: references from Abbas, H. 2013.
“Inconvenient Truths about Teacher Certiication Program.”. And from Bai, B. 2014.
“Enhancing In-service Teachers’ Professional Learning through a School-based
Professional Development Programme in Hong Kong”
7. Issues of teacher quality can be responded to by developing compelling programmes of
teacher education and professional development for teachers in several countries.
METHOD/METHODOLOGY
1. This study represents an explanatory mixed-methods (Creswell 2003)
evaluation inquiry
2. yes, the study collected, analysed, and mixed both quantitative and qualitative
data to evaluate the community-based teacher professional development
programme of the Tanoto Foundation.
3. The research design is survey
4. This mixed methods research procedure consists of: timing, weighting, mixing,
and theorizing.
5. This research conducted in eight districts in three programme
provinces, to know Community-based teacher professional
development in remote areas in Indonesia
6. The data in this study were collected through a survey, interviews,
and obser vations. Concerning internal validity, this study triangulated
the data through diferent research instruments.
7. This shortage of qualiied teachers is one of the common
shortcomings in remote areas as young qualiied teachers are more
attracted to teach in more developed regions.
RESULT/FINDINGS
1. The main result is enhancement of knowledge of student active learning
2. The hypothesis in this study was not tested.
3. The results of this study are presented very clearly using tables.
4. In my opinion, the tables and figures are well organized and easy to
understand and understand because the tables contain summary data from
observations and surveys.
5. Yes, the data in the table is explained again in the form of a very detailed and
clear text description.
6. The results of these findings are very good and clear, the findings are
explained clearly and in detail. Not only explained in the form of text
descriptions, but also made tables in the form of a summary of survey and
observation data. But based on these findings, there are differences in the
results of the survey from the teacher directly with the findings based on
observations found by researchers.
Discussion
1. Yes, each result is discussed in relation to associated original hypothesis.
2. Yes, this finding agrees with other findings regarding the experiences of
teachers and students. There is a gap between theoretical and practical
knowledge as soon as prospective teachers enter the actual classroom, this is
due to their misinterpretation of the theory or its incorrect application, or
their own inconsistencies. The apparent gap between teachers' theoretical
and practical knowledge may also be due to the possibility that teachers are
still trying to understand the lessons learned from their PD training and
incorporate new ideas into their practical knowledge.
3. Limitations in this study, namely:
a) Lack of in-depth analysis of each teacher's perspective, educative attitudes,
and problems. triangulation.
b) There are differences in data triangulation about the teacher's perspective
regarding active learning with the reality that occurs in the classroom.
c) The list of teacher and student behaviors used in the observation instrument
in particular may have been used in teacher teaching practice based on the
researcher's knowledge and information on the PD module.
.4, The implications are:
a) Theoretical implications, namely based on research by Rass (2012) reports
that "mentors and inductees must teach in the same school. (157) this means
that PD programs must ultimately be regulated and facilitated internally within
school districts. This Tanoto Foundation PD program empowers teachers to
become local facilitators through inter-school professional development
sessions.

b) Practical Implications, namely that the Government in Indonesia has

struggled to improve the quality of teachers in both public and private schools.
This has been done in several ways, one of which is the Tanoto Foundation,
which is involved in a teacher improvement project to improve the quality of
education in Indonesia. The program selects potential local facilitators from
among the participating teachers and organizes training for training for them.

5. Recommendations for further research are increasing the supervision of

school principals or mentors in school classrooms.
CLOSING
1. In my opinion, research is very important, research can be used as material
for our evaluation. From research we can find and provide the best solution
to a problem solving, research also encourages a critical attitude, and can be
a reference for information for the researcher.
2. Summary of implications, namely:
a) Theoretical implications, namely based on research by Rass (2012) reports
that "mentors and inductees must teach in the same school (157) this makes the
PD program ultimately have to be regulated and facilitated internally within the
school district.

b) Practical Implications, namely that the Government in Indonesia has

struggled to improve the quality of teachers in both public and private schools.

c) The methodological implication, namely this study used a mixed method,

namely combining quantitative and qualitative data to evaluate the community-
based teacher professional development program from the Tanoto Foundation.
3) To perfect this research, it is hoped that the reach of the program will be
expanded in remote areas and there should be further research related to
developing teacher abilities in teaching
