BACKGROUND OF STUDY
Psychological depression and suicidal tendencies are significant concerns among grade
school students, with suicide being the second leading cause of death for young
individuals aged 15-to-24 years. School organization can either assist or exacerbate
emotional and cognitive issues for students. The shortage of school counselors in the US
adds to the challenge of providing mental health support. Therefore, having a guidance
counselor in schools in the Philippines is crucial to monitor students' mental health and
prevent depression and suicide. In the Philippines, mental health illnesses rank as the
third most common form of morbidity among Filipinos, with a reported prevalence of 16%
of mental disorders among children.
Early and effective intervention is key to preventing depression, and it is essential for
schools to involve family members, academic teachers, and the community in supporting
students' mental well- being. Addressing the rising rates of suicide among school students
in the Philippines is urgent, highlighting the necessity of preventive measures against
depression.
