INTRODU
CTION
✘ Chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) is a lucrative vegetable, spice, and cash crop in the Indian subcontinent,
known for its hot and pungent tropical berries.

✘ Chilli is renowned for its nutritional value, medicinal properties, and therapeutic effects. It is also used as
an organic coloring and flavoring agent in the food industry.

✘ In the 2020-21 period, India cultivated chilli on 7.32 lakh hectares, producing 19.88 lakh tonnes with a
productivity of 2716 kg ha-1. Andhra Pradesh contributed 49%, Karnataka 5.6%, and Maharashtra 8.4% to
the total production.

✘ The largest area and production are in India followed by China.

✘ Key chilli-growing states in India include Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Orissa, Tamil Nadu,
Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.

3
✘ Salinity in soil or water that reduces plant growth and productivity worldwide. It is reported that more than
6% of land area of the world is affected by salinity stress.

✘ Salinity affects various physiological, biochemical and morphological aspects of plants such as seed
germination, seedling growth, seed vigour, vegetative growth, flowering, fruit setting, metabolism of plant
cells, respiration, lipid peroxidation, leaf chlorophyll and electrolyte leakage and leads to reduction in total
yield.

✘ The main causes of salinity problem in agricultural areas are wrong management of soil and water, low
rainfall and high evaporation.

✘ Thus, it is important to examine the salt tolerance of crops to determine the optimal salinity of irrigation
water to minimize the negative impacts on crop production, and at the same time maximize the economic
benefits.

4
OBJECTI
VES
1. To study the screening of saline tolerant chilli genotypes.

2. To study the effect of saline water irrigation on the growth and yield of chilli
genotypes.

3. To study the effect of saline water irrigation on the nutrient content and uptake by
chilli genotypes.

4. To study the effect of saline water irrigation on the quality parameters and nutrient
availability of post harvest soil.

6
✘ The research was carried out to study the screening of saline tolerant chilli genotypes.

✘ To fulfil all the objectives of this research, A laboratory experiment for screening saline
tolerant chilli genotypes was carried in P.G. laboratory of Department of Soil Science and
Agricultural Chemistry, Faculty of Agriculture, Annamalai university, Annamalai Nagar
during November, 2022.

7
✘ In order to study the effect of salinity and salinity tolerant chilli genotypes
on growth, yield, nutrient uptake and soil fertility, a pot experiment was
carried during December 2023- April 2023.

CONCLUS
ION
✘The results of the present study demonstrated that NaCl present in the soil affects the physiological
processes of growth and yield of chilli.

✘The increase in the growth of chilli variety, CO-1 is recorded in the treatment with 0 dSm -1
(borewell water) which is given as the T 1. The increase in salinity level, decreased the growth, flowering,
fruiting and yield and also yield contributing characters like fruit length, fruit girth, number of fruits and
fruit weight.

✘In the present study, the variety, CO-1, is found to be saline tolerant among the evaluated genotypes
based on the growth and yield characters.CO-1 is shown tolerance up to 2.5to5.0 dSm -1.Among the chilli
varieties Telangana variety-1 is found to be susceptible genotype.
