PERFORM CALCULATION

It is important to be able to measure and calculate surface

areas. It might be necessary to calculate, for example, the
surface area of the cross-section of a canal or the surface
area of a farm.
Most common measurements used in finding surface
areas.
• height
• base-the distance from a top corner to the opposite side
• width
• length
• diameter-for circle
Surface area of a Triangle

Formula: A(triangle)= 0.5 x base x height

Ex: Given
base = 3cm
height = 2 cm

Formula: 0.5 x base x height

0.5 x 3cm x 2cm = 3 cm2
Surface area of a Squares and Rectangles
Formula: A (square or rectangle) = length x width
Ex: Given
Square: length = 2cm Ans. A=length x width
width = 2cm =2cm x 2cm = 4cm2
Rectangle: length = 5cm Ans: A=length x width
width = 3cm =5cm x 3cm = 15cm2
Surface area of Rhombuses and Parallelograms
Formula: A (rhombus or parallelogram)= base x height
Ex: Given
Rhombus: base = 3cm Ans: A=base x height
height= 2cm =3cm x 2cm = 6cm2
Parallelogram: base=3.5cm Ans: A=base x height
height=3cm =3.5cm x 3cm = 10.5cm2
Surface area of Trapeziums
Formula: A (trapezium)= 0.5 (base + top) x height
Ex: Given Ans:
base=4cm A=0.5x(base+top)xheight
top=2cm =0.5 x (4cm+2cm) x 2cm
height=2cm =0.5 x 6cm x 2cm =6cm2
Surface area of Circles
Formula: A (circle)=1/4(¶xd2)
Ex: Given Answer
diameter =4.5cm A=1/4(¶xd)
=1/4(3.14 x d x d)
= 1/4 (3.14x4.5cm x 4.5cm)
= 15.9cm2
Determination of the surface area of a far

Regular shape of a farm is rectangle

Ex: Given
length of the field=50m
width of the field=30m
Ans. A=length x width
= 50m x 30m
=1500m2
 What is the area of the same field expressed in hectares?
A hectare is equal to 10, 000m, the formula of calculating a surface
area in hectare is ha=surface area in square meter(m2)

Introduction to volume
• unit of volume is cubic meter (m3) which is obtained by
multiplying a length of 1 meter, by a width of 1 meter, and

Supposed that their is a volume of 100m3 of water
spread over an area of one hectare.
Formula: Water depth (d)= Volume of water (V)

Percentage

The word percentage means “per hundred”, in other word

one percen is the one hundredth part of the total. You can
write either percent, or %, or 1/100, or 0.01.
