Lesson Information

Topic Title: Electricity

Lesson Title: Current, Voltage,
and Resistance

Learning Objectives

1) To model voltage and current

2) To be able to explain why resistance occurs

Starter

(1) What type of bonding occurs in a metal?

(2) What special features are there for this bonding?

(3) What are some components that can be put in a circuit?

Circuits

• Wires contain metal

• Therefore wires have metallic bonding

• We have positive metal ions, and a

sea of delocalised/free electrons

sea of delocalised/free electrons

• In a piece of metal without anything

else, the electrons all move about
randomly
Circuits

• When we put a power source

like a battery in a circuit, the
following happens:

• The negative electrons repel

from the negative end

• The negative electrons attract to the positive

end

• This creates a flow of electrons which is called

current
Circuits

• To measure the current we use an ammeter

• The ammeter must go in series with the wires

(this means that it goes “in line” with the circuit)

Voltage

When the electrons pass through the power source (such as battery)
they gain energy.

The voltage is a measure of the energy per electron

Analogy

Suppose you wanted to heat your home…

Voltage is how hot the hot water is

Current is how fast the water is flowing

Resistance

Since electrons have to force their way past the metal ions

The metal ions push back on the electrons.

Resistance is a measure of how difficult it is

for a current to flow.
