The Dutch education

system
School types

There are different types of


schools in The Netherlands:
 Public
 Private (special)
 International (public or
private)
 Religious
 Montessori
 Dutch language
 Waldorf schools
Stages and years of
education
Most of the Dutch pupils start school from 4 years old but it's
compulsary to start school from 5 years old. There are 3
stages of education in the Netherlands: primary,
secondary and higher education, and that is 12 grades in total.
When pupils start secondary education they enrole in either:
 pre-vocational secondary education (vmbo)
 general secondary education (havo)
 pre-university education (vwo)
Only pupils with learning disabilities are not required to
enrole in these learning tracks.
Education cost

State school education don't cost anything


except for after-school care that's 100 € per
year. Private schools cost from 5000 € -
24,000 €. While public international schools
cost around 5,500 € per child, and private
international school costs 12,000 € to
24,000€ annually. The price varies from the
school type.
Exams and tests
School hours and holidays

School starts from 8:30 in the morning and ends at 3 in the afternoon. In
between lessons they have a lunch break from 12 to 1 p.m. The lessons lasts
for around 50 min and is followed by a 10 -15 min break.
The school year starts in late August or on the September 1st and ends in the
middle of July (it varies from the region). In the year they get 5 different
school holidays:
 Autumn break
 Christmas break
 Spring break
 May break
 Summer break
Meals and uniforms

Kids bring their own food mostly sandwiches or some schools provide
