What is Hydrologic Methodologies?
Environment
Optimum
biological integrity of a river ecosystem
• Separate Mean Annual Flow (MAF) into
several ecologically relevant ranges 60%
Fair to
Good
– The minimum limit for environmental Flow is 10%
of the annual MAF (During Dray Seasons)
35%
– The Fair to Good habitat conditions requires at
least 35% of the MAF
– Optimum Environment in the river requires >
60% of the MAF minimum limit 10%
– Limitations of this method: (Dry Period)
• No flow variability considered
• It is arbitrary
GEF/UNDP Kura-Aras Demo project
Hydrological Method
Main Principals
• Calculate the Minimum monthly flow for each month for the period 1938-1952
Jan Feb March April May June July Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec
Min 163.68 164.68 233.81 335.17 463.87 465.07 206.94 106.30 119.37 157.61 155.87 155.84
Average 221.06 233.70 323.69 757.89 1028.80 738.66 361.23 207.91 230.66 315.51 311.92 232.99
• As it can be seen in the table, the extreme minimum monthly flow is 106.3 m3/s in month August
• Then, Go to the daily natural flow data for month of August and calculate the consecutive 10-days
• Identify the minimum 10-days average flow during that month (the survival flow))
• Calculate the percentage of the Survival Flow from the monthly minimum flow of that moth
