STATISTICS & PROBABILITY

SLOVIN’S FORMULA
Slovin’s Formula
• used to compute the sample
size () given the population size
() and the margin or error ().
• is a random sampling technique
formula to estimate sample size
Slovin’s Formula
𝑵
𝒏= 𝟐
𝟏+ 𝑵 𝒆
When to use Slovin’s Formula
• If a sample is taken from a
population, it is used to take
into account confidence levels
and margin of errors.
• When nothing about the
behavior of the population is
known.
How to use Slovin’s Formula
• Figure out what you want to
know and what your error of
tolerance will be.
• Plug in or substitute the given
values and compute. The result
will be the number of samples
needed.
Examples:
1. In a research, it is given that
N=1000, and e=0.05. Find the
sample size n.

2. A researcher plans to conduct a

survey. If the population in the high
city is 1 000 000, find the sample
size if the margin of error is 25%.
Examples:
3. A researcher is conducting a survey
on the sleep habits of Grade 11
learners of Dumangas National High
School. Currently there are 659
learners in the batch; at least how
many learners would the researcher
need if he/she wants to conduct the
study with 5% margin of error?
Examples:
4. A researcher is conducting a survey
on the sleep habits of Grade 11
learners of Dumangas National High
School. The researcher, with 3%
margin of error, was able to get
around 200 respondents from the
population; how many learners are
in the batch to start with?
Examples:
5. A researcher is conducting a survey
on the sleep habits of Grade 11
learners of Dumangas National High
School. The researcher, was able to
get 300 respondents out of the 450
total learners. What is the margin
of error?
