Atoms & Elements

DO NOW: Atoms & Elements

1. Create a list of all the chemicals
you know.

2. For each chemical in your list,

attempt to identify where you
might find it in your everyday life.
Today’s Outcomes
After this lesson you will be able to:

• Define and differentiate the following terms: atom,

molecule, element, compound & mixture

• Compare the states of matter in terms of their

properties

• Identify a range of chemical elements and list their

symbols

Careers in Chemical Science

• Chemical engineer
• Geochemist
• Forensic scientist
• Pharmacologist
• Toxicologist
• Nanotechnologist

Salaries in chemistry range from $60,000 to $180,000.

For the record, McDonald’s pays between $35,000 - $55,000.
YEAR 8 REVISION
Particle Theory
Particle theory states that all matter on Earth is
made up of tiny particle called atoms.
States of Matter
ACTIVITY 1: Terminology
YOUR TASK: Describe what the following terms mean by either…
• Writing definitions
• Drawing labelled diagrams

Atom
Element
Molecule
Compound
Mixture
Solution
Atoms & elements

Atom – tiny particles that are the

building blocks of everything

Element – 1 type of atom

Examples: hydrogen, oxygen, gold
Molecules
Molecule - two or more atoms that are
chemically joined together. In other
words, a group of atoms
Examples: H2, O2, H2O

REMEMBER:
Atom – tiny particle that are the building blocks
of everything
Compounds
Compound - a molecule that
contains more than one type of
element
Examples: H2O, C6H12O6, CH4

REMEMBER:
Element - 1 type of atom
Compound - more than 1 type of atom
Mixtures

Mixture - a collection of
different elements and/or
compounds not chemically
joined
Examples: salt & sand
Solutions
Solution – occur when one substance (the solute)
dissolves in another substance (solvent) to produce an
even mixture (the solution).
Examples:
salt (solute) & water (solvent)
ACTIVITY 2: Test yourself
YOUR TASK: Identify whether the following is an atom, molecule, element,
compound or mixture. There may be more than one correct answer.
# or atoms? # or atoms?

H molecule molecule

H element He element
compound compound

# or atoms? # or atoms?

H H molecule H H molecule
element C element
O H H
