Thrust Vectoring Mechanisms for Aerospace Applications

What is thrust vectoring?

The ability to change the angle of thrust is known as thrust vectoring .

The purpose of thrust vectoring:

- To achieve control over aircraft orientation and direction during its flight.

- To achieve the desired trajectory, improve stability, and avoid any deviations.

Applications:

- Aerospace and Rocketry

- Military and commercial aviation

- UAV’s

- Missile Systems

- Maritime Applications

- Land-based vehicles

Mechanical Thrust Vector Control

1. Achieved mechanically by actuators and gimballed mechanisms.

2. The vectoring configurations are heavy and complex.

Fluid Vector Control

1. Secondary flow source for controlling the exhaust flow

2. Reduce weight, Higher reliability, and engine airframe integration.

Divided into 7 control systems: Shock Vector Control, Bypass Shock
Vector Control, Counter Flow Control, Co-Flow Control, Throat Skewing control, Dual
Throat Nozzle Control, and Bypass Dual Throat Nozzle Control
SHOCK VECTOR CONTROL

Parameters that affect SVC

• Mach Number
• Mass Flow Rate
• Secondary Pressure Ratio
• Nozzle Pressure Ratio
• Injection Angle

DUAL THROAT NOZZLE (DTN)

A dual throat nozzle is developed as an extension to improve the

fluidic thrust vectoring system.
It is based on the throat-shifting nozzle concept using separation
control.
A DTN consists of two minimum areas (upstream and
downstream) and a recessed cavity located between the
convergent-divergent-convergent nozzle.
A secondary fluidic flow is injected in the upstream minimum
area, which creates a new area downstream of the flow. The
creation of a new area downstream skews the sonic plane, which
separates the flow in the cavity near the injection.
SVC and DTN CHALLENGES

• The potential downside of using SVC is the creation of shock which introduces performance losses

and structural damage due to the shock boundary layer interaction in the nozzle.

• High differential pressure losses.

• In fully expanded conditions, the oblique shock wave is less effective in deflecting the primary flow

• The dual throat nozzle (DTN) exhibited the most superior vectoring performance. While this method offers

remarkable performance attributes, the necessity for secondary injection leads to thrust reductions and

potential limitations on the maximum achievable engine thrust.

OBJECTIVES

1. Investigate the impact of Bypass Flow Injection on Shock Vector Control to improve

Thrust Vectoring performance.

2. Investigate the impact of Bypass Flow Injection on Dual Throat Nozzle to improve Thrust

Vectoring performance
METHODOLOGY EXPECTED OUTCOMES

• Improved Thrust Vectoring Efficiency

• Improved Thrust Vectoring Angle

• Minimize Thrust Losses
