Keywords:

Glaciers – A slowly moving mass or river of ice formed by the

accumulation and compaction of snow on mountains or near
the poles.
Ice sheets – A Layer of ice covering an extensive track of a
land for a long period of time.
Mountain glaciers – Bodies of ice that are found in the
mountains.

Have you ever heard of ice skating events

taking place on frozen surfaces? How is it
possible?
Glaciers are large masses of ice, that flow
Glaciers… cross the land and down slopes. Giant
glaciers, that cover huge areas are called
ice sheets.
Glaciers depend on snow
Rivers depend on rain falling from the sky.
Glaciers depend on snow!
In those cold places, snow flows layer upon
layer. Over time, layers below get
compacted to ice, like when you squeeze a
snowball very hard. It could take a layer of
snow 10 metres thick to make a layer of 1
metre.
As it gets thicker, the ice gets heavier. And
eventually it starts to flow, under the
pressure of its own weight. A glacier is
born!
Glaciers Flow
How can Ice Flow?
First ice flows inside the glacier, because the ice crystals
slide over each other, under pressure. Ice at the bottom of
the glacier may melts, then the whole glacier slides along
on the water.
