Genetics
Genetics is the science of inheritance (heredity) that deal with the way in
which traits of an organism are transmitted from generation to generation
It also concerned with units of inheritance (genes)
The structure, change and dynamics of genes at molecular, organismal
and population level also covered
Cont.…
Genetic crosses
Chromosomes are found in the nucleus of a cell and are made from the
DNA, which is bound with histone proteins to form the chromosomes.
Are a long stand of DNA that have been wrapped around histone (protein)
molecules
Genetic crosses
A gene is a section of DNA that determines a particular feature in
humans.
Example Height, color, earlobe attachment, seed shape, flower position
Whether or not the earlobes hang free or are attached is determined by a
single gene.
However, there are two versions of this gene.
Different versions of the same gene are called alleles.
Cont.….
Alleles are alternative forms of gene. They occupy the same locus on
homologous chromosomes
Example-the gene controlling plant may have alleles of shortness and
tallness
The gene controlling our blood group has three alleles these are A,B and
O alles
Cont.…
In our cells we have 46 chromosomes; 23 came from our fathers and 23
came from our mothers.
The chromosome that comes from Mother is called maternal
The chromosome that comes from Father is called paternal
Paternal and maternal chromosomes comes together during fertilization
and form homologous pairs.
homologous pairs is the chromosomes in a eukaryotic cell usually come in
pairs called homologous pairs. Each of the chromosomes in a homologous
pair have corresponding genes that together determine the same trait
Cont.…
These homologous pairs have genes controlling the same features in the
same position on the chromosome.
They are functionally similar because they carry the similar gene at the
same locus However, the alleles may not be the same.
Cont.…
locus(plural loci) is the position of a particular gene on a
chromosome
