Cell Division

Students will be able to:

•Summarize the functions of cell division

•Identify the events that take place during
the three stages of the cell cycle.
How do little elephants grow up to be BIG
elephants?
Why do animals shed
their skin?
The process of asexual
reproduction begins after a
sperm fertilizes an egg.
What are the
Functions of
Cell Division?
•Cell division allows
organisms to grow, repair
damaged structure, and
reproduce.
What happens during the
cell cycle?
•During cell cycle, a cell grows,
prepare cell division, and divides
into two new cells, which are
celled “daughter cells.”
Cell Cycle p.60-61
• Stage 1:
Interphase
• Stage 2 :
Mitosis
• Stage 3:
Cytokinesis
Interphase
occurs before mitosis begins
• Growing
• Copying DNA
• Preparing for Division
Interphase To-Do list
•Grow to full size
•Make more organelles and enzymes
•Copy DNA
•Produce other needed structure

2) Metaphase

Mitosis
3) Anaphase

4) Telophase
Prophase
1st step in Mitosis
• Mitosis begins (cell begins to divide)
• Centrioles (or poles) appear and begin to move to
opposite end of the cell.
• Spindle fibers form between the poles.

Metaphase
2nd step in Mitosis
• Each chromosome attaches to the spindle
fibers at its centromere.

What is missing from the cell? What
happened to the chromosomes?

•The nucleus is missing

•The chromosomes moved to the
center of the cell
Anaphase
3rd step in Mitosis
• Chromatids (or pairs of chromosomes)
separate and begin to move to opposite ends
of the cell.

Telophase
4th step in Mitosis
• Two new nuclei (Plural form of nucleus)form.
• Spindle fibers have disappeared
• Cell is pinched in around its middle

Cytokinesis
occurs after mitosis

• Cell membrane moves inward to create two

daughter cells – each with its own nucleus
with identical chromosomes.
