Demography of geriatric population:
World :

 population aged 60 years and over will increase from 1 billion in


2020 to 1.4 billion.

 By 2050, the world’s population of people aged 60 years and


older will double (2.1 billion).

 The number of persons aged 80 years or older is expected to


triple between 2020 and 2050 to reach 426 million.

Indian Population
• As per the report, there were 149 million persons aged 60
years and above in 2022 (as of 1 July), comprising around
10.5% of the country’s population.
• And, by 2050, this population will double to 20.8%, with the
absolute number at 347 million.
• By the end of the century, the elderly will constitute over 36%

of the total population of the country, the report

predicted.

• Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior
Citizens Act, 2007
• National Policy for Senior Citizens 2011,
• The National Programme for Health Care of Elderly
and Health and Wellness Centers under the
Ayushman Bharat programme provide dedicated
healthcare to elderly at primary health care
settings.
