Introduction
1. Simple PSD
• The simple power split device is a planetary gear set design.
• This planetary gearbox set is made of three different sets of gear types named
sun gears, planet gears and a ring gear.
i) Ring gear: Connects the main electric motor to the driving wheels through the
output axle.
ii) Planetary gears: A gear carrier consists of four planetary gears and these gears
are connected to the IC engine and the ring gears.
iii) Sun gear: The sun gear connects the generator with the planetary gears. It is
used to start the vehicle without the need for the starter motor

* Advantages of PSD

i) Low emissions: Hybrid vehicles aim to environmental friendly with lower

enussions of pollutants and smog from the vehicles.
ii) Fuel efficiency: Hybrid vehicles combine the power from the IC engine
and batteries and help in the fuel efficiency to a greater extent.
iii) Driving comfort: These cars produce good driving experience by
interchanging thepower to torque ratio based upon the requirements. Hybrid
cars are energetic and fun to ride without compromising on fuel efficiency.
These vehicles operate with a quiet IC engine and are very smooth to ride

* E – M COMPOUND PSD
• The simple PSD, despite the simple construction, has limitations on the power
management and operation of the vehicle.
• The E-M compound PSD gives more flexibility to the operation of the hybrid
system and power flow schemes.
• The design of PSD was developed at Iran University of Science and Technology
(IUST) in 2010.
• Compound PSD is a compact device which is based on a planetary gear set and
includes an additional input shaft on EM2. Refer Fig. 10.10.
• This layout is known as Easier-Management (EM) PSD. The term E-M also
stands for the names of inventor Emadi-Mashadi.

• Fig. 10.10 shows the layout of the designed dual-mode power-split powertrain.
• It consists of two planetary gears, two clutches, two electric machines and an
internal combustion engine.
• Motor/generators 1 and 2 (MG1 and MG2) and the engine are connected to the
sun gear, ring gear and planet carrier of the simple planetary gear set (PGI),
respectively. The compound planetary gear set (PG2) has four gears.
• The rear sun (Sp) is connected to the ring gear of PGI and the carrier is
connected to the vehicle output.
• Connection of its two other gears is dependent on the performance of the
clutches (CL1 and CL2). CLI connects (or disconnects) the front sun (SF) of
PG2 to the sun gear of PGI and CL2 locks (or unlocks) the ring gear of PG2 to
the ground.
