Describe and explain the science behind vehicle

safety.
SCIENCE IDEA

Design a landing craft to protect an egg during a

collision with the floor.
ENQUIRY SKILL
Keywords
Equilibrium: State of an object when opposing forces are balanced.
Deformation: Changing shape due to a force.
Newton: Unit for measuring forces (N).
Resultant force: Single force which can replace all the forces acting on an
object and have the same effect.
Friction: Force opposing motion which is caused by the interaction of surfaces
moving over one another. It is called 'drag' if one is a fluid.
Contact force: One that acts by direct contact.
Air resistance: As an object moves through the air, it is colliding with particles.
The particles push back on the object.

Your task is to design a ‘landing craft’ to protect an egg during a collision with the floor. Include:

• Detail the materials you can use to build a structure that has the features of a modern car body are
Sellotape, String, Strips of cardboard, Straws, Lolly sticks, Sheets of card, Balloon (limit of 1), Cups
and Elastic bands.
• Include rigid zones and crumple zones.
• Consider the equipment and a design the landing craft in your booklet.
• Clearly label your final design to justify how each component will help protect the vehicles delicate
passenger.
• Use the information on the next page to calculate your cost of materials.
• Build your landing craft.

Extend
In addition to completing this booklet and building your landing craft, you can choose to make a poster
or leaflet advertising your design. This is an optional task.
As with car manufacturers, you need to consider budget

• Sellotape costs 500 aed per 5cm

• String costs 500 aed per 10cm
• Strips of cardboard costs 3,000 aed each
• Straws will cost 1,500 aed each
• Lolly sticks 2500 aed each
• Sheets of card 4,500 aed each
• Balloon (limit of 1) 25,000 aed
• Cups cost 5,000 aed
• Elastic bands cost 250 aed each

Explanation for design
Why did you choose this safety feature? What makes you think that it will work? Why did you not choose the other safety features? (Full sentences)
Final landing craft design
Write down any changes that you have made with your design here. Why did you change this? Draw your final design below and label it.
Costing
Do not write here until you have finished building. Write a list of everything used. Include the quantity and the cost.
