Reading Strategy
: Identifying sequences
The writer thinks that fashion modeling for teenagers is not an ideal job.
With the teen fashion industry boomig , there is a growing market for very young
models, sometimes as young as 12 or 13 years old. At that age, young people may be
attracted to modeling because they think it is a glamorous and fun way to make
money.
They don’t always understand that the glamor is only what the public sees and
that the reality of professional modeling is actually hard work.
First, young models sometimes discover that the long hours and the
traveling mean that they have to give up school. At first, this may not
seem too difficult, but when their career is over, many young models
find themselves without preparation for other jobs.
Sometimes they can develop close relationship with other models, but a model’s
life can be lonely and stressful.
Next, there is the question of health. The fashion industry values models
who are very thin. The most popular size for models is extra small. This
means that young models must work hard to keep their weight down.
Since they have little time to exercise, this usually means keeping a very strict
diet. Lots of work with little food can have very serious consequences for
a model’s health.
This is true for models of any age, but remember that teens are still developing.
Not eating enough can have health consequneces for the rest of the model’s
life.
Then, there can be other problems for young models. Sometimes they are asked
to wear clothes or to do things that are not appropriate for teenagers.
Finally, there is the question of job security. Many people believe that
models earn a lot of money. This is true of supermodels, but there are only
a few supermodels in the world.
Most of the people who work in the industry are not, and never will be,
famous. They are not always well-paid. Sometimes they only receive
the clothing they models as a payment. Sometimes they receive money,
but they have no pension fund and no future job security.
Most models are young. For teen models, the job is over by the time
they are 24 years old. If they are lucky, they will have experience and
some money saved to go back to school and find other work.
If they are not lucky, they will find themselves without work, without
money, without education, and without their health.
Is modeling a glamorous job? Maybe. But it can also be hard work with
few benefits.
