During the drought of the 1930s, without natural anchors to keep the soil in place, it dried, turned to dust, and blew away eastward and southward in large dark clouds Millions of acres of farmland became useless, and hundreds of thousands of people were forced to leave their homes, many of these families migrated to California and other states, where they found economic conditions little better than those they had left.

Curleys wife is the only woman on the entire farm. She is mistrusted by her husband and has the eye. Curleys wife's role in the novel is to be a foil, and a danger to lennie. Curleys wifes obsession with her self turns out to be her down fall. This is because she lets lennie stroke her hair in a self admiring fashion which leads to him accidentally breaking her neck. The men on the farm refer to her as a Tramp,tart and a looloo.
