Let us start our
Measurements Discussions on
Measurements and
a nd Calculations calculations.

A system of measurement is a set of units which can be used to

specify anything can be measured. In electricity you will only use
measurement for length for laying out and installing electrical
materials.

1. English system is a manner in which people secure

measurements using body parts and familiar objects.
The examples for measuring length using english system are foot,
inch, yard, mile, etc.
Units Equivalent
1foot (ft) 12 inches (in)
1foot (ft) 3 yards (yd)
1yard 36 inches
How to read the inch
graduation:
1. The first graduation has a
value of 1/ 16 inch.
2. The second graduation has a
value of 1/8 inch.
3. The third graduation has a
value of 3/16 inch.
4. The fourth graduation has a
value of 1/4 inch up to 16/16 or
1 inch.

2. Metric system is a decimalized system of measurement. The

examples for measuring length using metric system are millimeter,
centimeter, decimeter, meter, etc.
Units Equivalent
10 millimeters (mm) 1 centimeter (cm)

10 centimeters (cm) 3 yards (yd)

10 decimeters (dm) 36 inches

Conversion
English to Metric Equivalents

Units Equivalent

1 inch (in) 2.54 centimeter (cm)

1 foot (ft) 30.48 centimeter (cm)

1 yard (yd) 91.44 centimeter (cm)

Let’s do
conversion now!
Example Number 2 :
Very good! You
already know how to measure 5 inches = __________cm Since,
length. Let us now proceed 5 in = 2.54 cm
in measuring resistance and 1 in
voltage using a multitester.
Are you excited?
5 x 2.54 cm
1
Therefore : 5 inches = 12.7 cm

The table below shows how to read resistance using ohmmeter or multitester
expressed in ohms (Ω).

Range 0-2 2-10 10-20 20-50 50- 100 100- 200

Range x 1 0.2 0.5 1 2 5 20

Range x 10 2 5 10 20 50 200
Range x 1k 20 50 100 200 500 2k
Range x 10k 200 500 1k 2k 5k 20k
Example No. 1

Range Setting: Range x 1 This

means that the reading will be
multiplied by 1
Reading: 17 x 1

Final Reading : 17Ω

Example No. 2
Range Setting: Range x 10

This means that the reading

will be multiplied by 10
Reading: 17 x 10

Final Reading : 170Ω

Final Reading : 17KΩ

Range Setting: Range x

1K
This means that the
reading will be
multiplied by 1000
Reading: 17 x 1000
The table below shows how to read
voltage using the multitester expressed in
volts (V).
Range Value
Range 10 V 0.2 V
Range 50 V 1V
Range 250 V 5V
Range 1000V 20V
Range Setting: Range 10 V This
Scale of th means that you will look in the
voltmeter or range of 10 V and reading per
multitester for graduation is 0.2 V
voltage.
Final Reading : 7 V

Range Selection 10, 50, 250

and 1000.
Example No. 2
Range Setting: Range 50 V
This means that you will
look in the range of 50 V
and reading per graduation
is 1 V

Final Reading : 35 V
Example No. 3
Range Setting: Range
250 V
This means that you will
look in the range of 250
V and reading per
graduation is 5 V
Final Reading : 175 V
Measurement and calculations
in Electrical installation and Maintenance

•is very important especially during the

estimation and purchase of materials
and when installing them. Measurement
and calculation of length can either be
expressed in metric or english using
ruler/foot rule, pull-push rule, meter stick,
etc. On the other hand voltmeter,
ohmmeter, ammeter and multitester will
be measuring and calculating voltage,
current and resistance.
Guided Activity 2
Indicate the voltage reading of the voltmeter/ multitester below.
Guided Activity 3
Example
Convert the following measurements:
20mm = ___cm
Since:
20 mm = 1cm
10 mm
