LESSON

A chemical reaction is the process in which

substances undergo chemical change. In a
chemical change, the atoms rearrange, and
new substance is formed. The new substance
will have new and different properties. The
properties of the new materials are different
from those of the reactants. The number of
atoms before and after the chemical change
is the same but the number of molecules will
change
Consider how water forms from Hydrogen (H2) and Oxygen (O2)
molecules. We have hydrogen and oxygen on the left side of the
arrow reacting to make water on the right of the arrow.
Reactants - the substances that undergo the chemical changes
(left side of the reaction).
Product - the substances that formed after chemical reaction
(right side of the reaction).
In the reaction, the bonds between hydrogen atoms in the hydrogen
molecules breaks down. The bonds between the atom molecules in the
oxygen atoms also breaks down. Then each
oxygen atom forma a bond with two hydrogen atoms giving rise to a new
arrangement in the form of water molecules.
According to the Law of conservation of
mass, the mass of the products in a
chemical reaction must equal the mass of
the reactants. During chemical reaction, no
new atoms were created nor destroy. In other
words, in a chemical change, the mass of
the products will always be equal to the
mass of the reactants. Just like in example
of water, there were four atoms of hydrogen
atoms and two oxygen atoms in both sides of
the reactions.
POSTTEST

a) The atoms of the reactants always stay together to form the products.
b) The atoms of the reactants unbond, rearrange, and then rebond to form the
products.
c) New atoms are formed which combine to make the products.
d) Some atoms disappear while others multiply to form the products.
2. In a chemical reaction, mass is conserved. This means that
a) The mass of the reactants stays the same during a chemical reaction.
b) The mass of the products stays the same during a chemical reaction.
c) The type and number of atoms in the reactants equals the type and
number of atoms in the products.
d) The mass of the products is always twice the mass of the reactants.
3. Why do atoms needs to break their bonds after the reaction?
a. bonds must be broken before the atoms can be formed into new bonds
b. because it will make them active
